I saw myself on video the other day when I didn't know I was being recorded. It was quite disturbing actually. I had no idea I looked like that/moved like that/etc. If you guys can, you should try doing this.

I was horrified when I saw myself in an extended family photo. As much as I did not want to be a product of my environment, I immediatley realized I was delusional in thinking that I was not. That was the high water mark when the changes began.

What is even scarier is to discover yourself in an online porn video.

I once had that experience, and at first I believed the person on the video was another individual (a friend of mine). Then I turned towards the camera...

What a marvelous question.

If someone were to ask me what I saw myself as, I would definitely not describe my physical appearance. I don’t go around everyday thinking, “Today I’m a white male….” I do sometimes go around thinking about moral dilemmas, or what companies I boycott and for what reasons. I am who I am because of my experiences, knowledge, morals, ideas, or lack thereof.

So with the question, “Can any image be a complete reflection of Self?” Certainly not. But talking about physical appearance… absolutely. Even if I think of my exterior as just a useless pile of flesh, that’s how other people see me. I don’t like that it’s a way to stereotype people, but whatcha gonna do? I have to move my brain around somehow, might as well be in this pasty looking guy with brown hair and a red beard I call “me.”

Poid nailed it though. Whether we like it or not, our self image is part of the real us. With the exception of the flip sidedness of mirrors, they’re identical to what others see, and who we physically are.

My freshman year of college I had to record myself giving a speech for a class. I watched it this year (5-6 years later). Boy was I embarrassed. I remember my reaction at the time too. I was like, “Jesus, do I really act like that?” Silly mannerisms I didn’t even notice are quite noticeable to others.

This is also how I feel about how I look.

Which means I don't really know how I look. Does my self image change based on how I feel? I've noticed I seem to look sharp when I feel good and look awkward when I feel bad. Do others see this or is it all in my head?

Sometimes I feel as if the image in the mirror is not me but a tool that I use. Can anyone relate?

I feel the exact same way.
That's where self consiousness starts from
