bulk straw..... washing machine idea!

Hello All.!
Q: i plan on spawning straw with millet and not wanting to have to get the heating pad outside in mid-winter!!!! i was pondering on my washing machine!
THE PLAN::::
1- wash down washer 2- turn up water heater a few notches ( need more research or input pls ) 3- run a wash with a lot of bleach ( no straw, just empty load with javex) 4- cut straw up ( plan on using yard scisors , big blade with woden handle ) ???? 5- load pillow cases half full 6- pop that sucker in the washing machine with a HOT cycle 7- wait for water level to rise then stop machine and wait 20 minutes 8- continue cycle, let water drain and fill up again with more hot water 9- runt his cycle a few times and then the spin cycle to remover excess water not sure how long to spin, but would need to experiment!?
and voila, from the pillow case to rubermaid bin, let cool and spawn.
anyone ever tried this or something similar, i've done a few searches on the toolbar but nothing came up,,,??????

You should try to get the temperatures up to about 165(turn up the water heater and experiment using a thermometer) if you can. I dont know if this would do any sort of damage to the washer (i doubt it) This would be a great way to pasturize. You could then also load a few pillow cases into the washer, as the load it could hold would be more than just one! Quite an innovative idea, try it out! Make sure the cleaning agents are throughly washed out and you clean out the place where u put the cleaners to (if thats how your washer works.)

That was the idea behind the javex run, i figured it would remove any TIDE or Sunlight!!! and, most nasties!
160 F you say,, will the water heater go that hight? i assume it would, i'll be reading up on this today! or if anyone has input!
But yeah, you could put at least 4 pillow cases to ballance the load i guess. That's a lot of straw!!!!!!
Cool!
thanks.

It all depends on your hot water heater, this is where you would have to make the adjustment. Some water heaters go up to 190 deg F (ones i've seen)

I think I confused some terms. Washing machine is for washing dishes or laundry?
I think the laundry machine would be better suited.

ehhh, after some reflection,, a dishwasher would only splash water around, not submerge the straw,,, vs clothes washer were you can set the water level to max and cover the straw with hot water...
opinions?

sounds brilliant, could anyone be more specific as to how to turn the water heater up?, i like the idea but am a little nervous considering there is no instruction booklet w/ the heater and it is not obvious how to change the setting. thanks i love innovation

yup it works. I've posted pretty detailed info before, with pix and all. I think I really should start a website to archive the stuff I post as it all seems to get lost from year to year and site to site. I'll see what I can dig up.

Sounds like a great idea, CG. You definately want more than one pillowcase in there though, or your washer will walk right out the door! Maybe divide the total amount of straw between at least two bags, so that the load is balanced during the spin cycle. Post your results, I'd be willing to try it as long as somebody else risks their washing machine first!

Ask and ye shall receive. Lotsa info for you here, all cut and paste.
this is from the bulk neglect report where I used the hotwater heater to do the pre-heating of the pastueurization water:
In reply to:
Bulk Substrate Prep
A large trashcan is loaded with straw and aged cow dung appearing to be about 75% straw 25% dung by volume. A pillowcase with extra dung is put on top of mixture and weighted with a cinder block. The thermostat on the hot-water heater is turned up as high as it goes, 160 deg F. The trashcan is placed in a bathtub and filled to the cinder block with the now very hot tap water. Enough boiling water from a pot on the stove is poured into the trashcan to bring the temp up to 175 deg F according to a thermometer in the can. The lid is placed on the trashcan and allowed to sit for 45 minutes, at which time the water has cooled to only about 155 deg F. Big ass heat resistant gloves are worn, and the trashcan is inverted carefully for draining, not allowing any substrate to escape the can. The can is left inverted to drain overnight.
From a post on 3-30-02:
In reply to:
Easy preparation of bulk straw 03/30/02 05:46 AM Edit Reply
This isn't really new, just often overlooked. I posted it at mycotopia recently and figured I'd cutandpaste:
Straw should be submerged in 160ish water for 30-45 minutes for proper pasteurization. This is pretty much done in large pots on the stove at home, and most people don't have very large pots and therefore have to do many pot fulls. Even a 22 qt. pot will need a couple of loads to fill a 45 gallon terrerium to a good bulk depth.
Here is a much easier way. Your water heater has an adjustable thermestat. Most of them are located under an access panel on the front of the tank, secured loosely by one or two screws. Most hot water heaters actually have two thermestats, one at the bottom and one at the top, each under an access panel. Yours is probably set somewhere around 120 if you are lucky. Most go up to 165. Anybody see where I'm going? The thermestat often has a set screw which will change the setting. Set it all the way up. You aren't doing any damage, the things are made to be adjusted. Any good handyman has probably already considered this anyway, usually lowering the setting to save energy costs...(and they would also remind the dangerously ignorant to flip the breaker to the hot water heater before even opening the access panel to look at the thermestat, much less adjusting it. there are often hot wires under that panel)
Put a pot of water on the stove...
Straw is loaded into cloth bags, pillow cases, laundry bags etc to fill a trash can. A weight or cinder block or something holds it down. Put the trash can in the tub. Fill to just over the weight with the now scorching 165 degree water. GO TURN DOWN THE HOT WATER HEATER NOW!!! DON'T WAIT, YOU WILL FORGET YOU BURNOUT, THEN YOUR WIFE WILL HAVE SERIOUS BURNS ALL OVER HER ASS!!!
You do loose a few degrees due to the cold straw, but your water should now be about 150. Use a meat or candy thermometer to verify temp. Add the now boiling water from the stove to bring temps up to 165-175. Put the lid on to conserve heat, and wait for 45 minutes. Some hot water heaters are kick ass and you won't even need to add any (near)boiling water.
TURN THE HOT WATER HEATER BACK DOWN!!!!!! PLEASE DO NOT BURN YOUR FAMILY, ESPECIALLY IF THERE ARE YOUNG OR OLD PEOPLE IN YOUR HOME!!!!!!
Now, 30-45 minutes later, be careful, wear gloves, tip the can and drain some water, it'll be nasty colored. then raise the bags, leave them hanging somewhere to drip dry for several hours or overnight. Innoculate with your spawn of choice, case and don't worry about growing again for the next year or so.
Much easier than several loads of straw in a large pot. I know a guy who pasteurizes straw in bags in his washing machine since he adjusted his water temp.
a follow up to that post:
In reply to:
I'm still wondering about the washing machine thing myself though. Yeah, it spins dry, is easy and all that but I don't know... Even clean straw is pretty damn dirty. Actually, I think I'd do it, just run the washer empty to rinse all the dirt out b4 washing clothes.
a reply I made to a thread about rippers Ice chest tek:
In reply to:
I always did similar, but found it very helpful to adjust the temperature on my hot water heater. I could get 160-170 deg water straight from the tap. The straw cools it down some, usually to about 150, so just a little itty bitty pot of boiling water brings the temperature up to the desired 160. Hot water heaters rule!.
Just be safe and let everyone in the house know you've done it, and be sure to reset it, and use all the superheated water before your three year old's bath time! 160 will poach a baby in a few minutes, not good
Does that help? The guy who was using the washing machine always had comparable results to my way of doing it. I didn't want to mess up my machine though for fear of my lady so I never got all the excact specifics from him. I know I stressed it above but DON'T FORGET TO TURN THE HOTWATER HEATER DOWN!

Oh yeah, also need to stress that you cut off the breaker to the hotwater heater. Although 120v probably won't killy you, I've been bit by it a couple times while adjusting the damn thing. Once you open that access panel, you're fair game for a nice little jolt.

on an episode of home improvement, Al showed how to poach a salmon in the dishwasher. Steam is preferable to water because less nutrient is washed away.

The only thing that can wash away from straw is dirt and the waxy coating that you want washed away anyway.
Steam pasteurization is prefered by many, however time must be increased. Dry straw should be treated by steam for about 4 hrs. Soaked in hot water for about an hour. Who knows how long when the dishwasher does spray some water on it, but doesn't submerge it? Trial and error I guess. Unless you somehow blocked the streams of water from hitting the straw, then you'd only be dealing with steam.
The washing machine guy I knew tried it a couple times in the dishwasher. Don't know his specific results, but he ended up using the washing machine on a regular basis.

strange.....don't most washing machines heat up their own water to the right temp? mine does. I've only tried it once, and it worked fine. I especially like the way the spin cycle cuts down the draining time to 5 mins or so. I dunno though, I like how I can monitor the temp all through the process using a big pot, though I do still spin dry the straw if I'm feeling impatient

great idea. truly brilliant. just as a test, i'm going to put a thermometer in a hard case and seal it. toss it into my washer and check the temp in mid soak. that should be accurate enough. i'll let everyone know the results

washing machines are for making bubble hash, mark where your water heater is set at(so you can put it back down), turn up as high as it goes, usually, set biggest cooler you can find on toilet, other end in tub, fill will straw, check temp of hot water, heat to 170, pour in cooler, wait one hour drain in tub or shitter, spend time saved growing weed to put in warsh machine, google "making hash in washing machine" just my 2 cents
Ps, I have fuct more than one dishwasher with this sort of idea, so if you don't have roommates? go for it guess?
