Almost 5 weeks of colinizing, not quite 100%
    #1063157 - 11/18/02 05:18 PM (14 years, 25 days ago)

Sorry this seems to come up a lot, and I have read a lot, but this is my first time growing and dont want to make a mistake

So it will be 5 weeks from innoculation this saturday. Im using Golden Teacher. 3 of my jars are completely colinized, except for a layer on the top. I believe this is just dry vermiculite that I used to 'seal' the jars, because the substrate inside has shrunk a bit, and I can now just barely see through across the top of the jars, below the lid.

My other 4 jars are missing a "decent chunk" of colinization near the bottom of the jar. Now I flipped them over, but they still dont seem to grow. The substrate thats missing mycelium *looks* just like dry vermiculate, ie I cannot see any flower.

It seems like I probably made the substrate wrong, or it wasnt evenly distributed enough. Maybe too little water or flour, or something like that. It just really doesnt seem like they will grow anymore. Is this possible?

I was oringally going to leave the cakes as cakes and harvest them like that, but now Im wondering if some jars are missing junks if it would better to case thoughs jars (and possibly still leave the fully colonized jars as cakes).

Should I just keep waiting, or birth them, or should I case them instead of leaving them as cakes?

Thanks a lot!

if your talking about casing the not completely colonized cakes its not a good idea, but can work. It opens up a big door for contams. I got lucky when i cased my 60% colonized mycobag because it was drying out. Took a little while to colonize the casing layer but still fruited very well.

the bottom always takes the longest to colonize. if you end up waiting another week or so, you might as well flip it out and try to get the cake to fruit. i've had cakes where the bottom never colonizes. it happens

Well it really doesnt look like they will colonize. The empty spots in the jar just look like vermiculite... no flour. It seems like the substrate wasnt distributed well enough.

Is this possible? I

If they've simply stopped, as two of mine appeared to have largely done, I'd case them, trying to cut out any significant uncolonized substrate.
