Mushrooms comes up uneven, when to pick?
    #10628745 - 07/06/09 07:39 AM (15 years, 6 months ago)

I was wondering, in one of these casing 2 mushrooms have "opened" up. should I pick this mushrooms right away? I was thinking maybe just cutting off the top of the stem right under the cap and take a spore print and pick all later could be a good idea so I dont rip up the casing layer now.

Do pick some for spore prints.

As far as the rest- pick them all at once for shorter cropping cycles. You are racing against contams, and you want to finish first. The mushrooms are only gaining water weight at this point anyway- they aren't growing any additional magic.

I'd harvest the one tray today, and the other two probably in two days or so. But that's me.

Yes, cut the cap off the early finishers for your prints, and let the rest mature,it will only be a day or two by the looks.
And your trays look good by the way. Nice work.

" what is this black pattern on top? spores?"

i always wondered that too, and just figured it was spores. then i had it happen to the tallest shrooms in my fc, and there weren't any shrooms above the ones that got that weird design on them so i know it wasn't spores dropped from a taller shroom.
anyone care to enighten us?

Yes those are spores,  air currents in the FC carry the spores and some land on the tops.

It's not air currents, it's the shape of the spores and the velocity in which they're released.  They're shaped like airplane wings so they curl around and go up into the wind.  In the absence of wind, they settle on top of the fruits.

Pick your mushrooms as they're ready, stem and all.  Simply slice off the stem just above the casing layer with a sharp knife so you don't disturb other fruits growing nearby.
