Is This Cobweb Mold? *Pics*
    #10618859 - 07/04/09 01:32 AM (15 years, 6 months ago)

I'm pretty sure this is cobweb mold but I just wanted to put a pic up to make a definite ID.

Is this cobweb mold as well in my bulk substrate? I think it is after getting up close with camera.

I crumbled up 2 brf cakes in a zip lock bag then let the substrate sit for a day in the dark to recover. I then pasteurized some horse poo and let it cool over night in the pot. Then I made about 3 layers of substrate in the poo. If it is cobweb mold have I done something wrong?

Also can I still let it fruit successfully? I'm just really keen to have some of these since I've been waiting for months.

intresting, some nice quality pictures you got there. Looks like cobweb to me, yes, if you compare them with the images on http://www.shroomery.org/5276/What-are-common-contaminants-of-the-mushroom-culture.

ps. i'm not the professional around here, so lets wait for more replies.

Yea it appears to be cobweb. spray it w/ a 3% h2o2 solution. and increase FAE to prevent it from happening again

however. it sounds like your inoculant and cakes might have been contaminated. so I dunno if it will fruit successfully

I say that because cobweb mold usually wouldn't appear in a grain jar like that unless it:

wasn't sterilized
or you didn't follow sterile procedure while inoculating
or u have a contaminated syringe

Is it possible to cut out the piece of substrate that is good and put it in another container to and let it fruit?

Will spraying the H202 solution kill the mold or just prevent it from happening next time? That's just hydrogen peroxide right? The bottle I have is the one in the pic and says "solution 3% w/w"

The cakes didn't seem to have and contaminants. One cake I threw out did but I could tell the difference. The grain jar with the contamination seems to be the only one and I did that in a glove box and flame sterilized the needle each time. The filters a polyfil as well.

the h202 will pretty much kill it. the cobweb will be so deadened that it usually doesn't recover

FAE prevents cobweb though

I sprayed it with the H202 and it seems to be gone for now. It's still in its casing with the foil covering it still. The only FAE is the 4 small holes I poked in the foil. Should I do anything else?

What does FAE stand for?

Fresh Air Exchange - you generally dont want FAE until you are actively fruiting your substrate.  Before the fruiting stage your concern is GE - Gas Exchange.

If you are getting cobweb in your grains/pf cakes, you need to examine your sterilization process or your inoculation technique.

You cant boost FAE in your spawn to prevent cobweb - excess fresh air will dry out your spawn / induce pinning.

Peroxide is good to spray on a cobweb infection to steal yourself a few days/ maybe weeks to get that last flush off of an already fruiting substrate.  It is no substitute for proper sterilization.  Peroxide wont kill it completely - if you have cobweb in your grain/pf spawn, just toss them.

If the cobweb is growing on your partially colonized substrates - its a judgement call.  You dont want that shit growing crazy and infecting your whole grow space.  If the cobweb looks like its winning - cut your losses.
