Anytime I try something new with a bulk sub I try to use a higher spawn ratio to ensure success.
I think 1:4 is sort of the standard, but the more you use the better your odds of not getting contamed.
Slowed colonization in a bulk sub could be related to temperature changes. Colonizing substrates like constant temps, with a small fluctuation of maybe a couple degrees. Then again, a stalled sub could be due to an unseen contam.
When in doubt, use as much spawn as you can

Is that 1:4 spawn to substrate?

Well, I can rule out temp changes. The temps in that room are totally stable in the upper seventies.
I guess I just ain't gonna skimp on the spawn at all. I'm going to go two quarts to a six quart container. That's a thirty percent ratio. I'll see what happens I guess.

I also had another thought as I have been perusing old posts looking for clues. I thought I might put about a 25 percent spawn to sub ratio and get it going nice and strong in a spawn bag. Then once everything seems like it is cranking along pretty good, go ahead and put the substrate (hpoo in this case) into the cases I am going to be fruiting in.
I have been really struggling with contamination lately. The closet area I used to grow in is now housing another indoor horticultural adventure. It has a cement floor, and I never really struggled with contams in there. Now my grow area has wall to wall carpet where contams thrive (in the carpet). So I have covered a good part of the carpet in the room with drywall to try and stop some of it, but I dont' know how much good that will do. So I need to get everything colonized...at least well on the way to full colonization before it can be released into my grow area.
So anyway, by way of explanation there is my rationale for the grow bag experiment I think I may tinker with.
What do you think?
