Controlling woodlouse (crustacean pest) in outdoor patch
    #10625218 - 07/05/09 02:51 PM (15 years, 6 months ago)

I started noticing the appearance of these crawling bugs in/around the outdoor patch several days ago (this one is about 5mm long):

I thought they were insects at first, but upon closer inspection they have 6 or 7 pairs of legs. Using this handy site I figured them out to be crustaceans called woodlouse, or sow bugs.

Most of the time I see them, they're close to the perimeter of the outdoor patch, under loose clumps of soil or dead leaves. I keep the patch under a plastic sheet, which is misted once a day or less frequently if it has been raining. The Wikipedia article explains they inhabit moist areas and like to be under rocks and logs and such, so I have raked away the decaying leaves that provided them shelter and food, and probably accommodated many other types of bugs. I also flattened out the ground around the patch to deter their hiding in nooks and crannies.

Hopefully I've taken enough steps to keep them farther away from the patch. However, there are still clumps of dirt etc. in the patch itself, and straw on top, and the humidity is not going away. If they continue to be present, is there any chance that they are consuming the mycelium and fruits? I've noticed some holes in the caps, that I attribute to these little bastards or snails/slugs which I've had problems with in the past.
