HID Metal Halide
    #10624659 - 07/05/09 12:48 PM (15 years, 6 months ago)

I have a 400w Metal Halide that gives a red spectrum.

Anyone know if red or blue most benefits these little guys?

blue but that is way overkill. I use 1 of those energy saver bulbs in a standard 60w socket and that is just fine.

Completely unnecessary.

Those things put off quite a bit of heat, and pull ALOT of electricity.  A flourescent bulb in the 6500K range is best, it won't mess with temps too much, and pulls minimal power.

If you're doing a small grow in a monotub, $20-$30 on a flourescent 2' or 3' fixture with bulb will do you right.

I'm partly using for its heat, the basement get cold 65f, the bulb is at a distance and it keeps it around 71-74. So the heat helps. I can afford to run it.

Then go for it.  It is unnecessary, but I'd like to see if makes for a better pinset.  Who knows, you could be on to something.

I'd still be a little worried about the power consumption, not because of the cost, but the fact that it could raise red flags at the power company, especially when it's on a timer.  That's how some people get busted growin reefer.

400w bulb is like having 4 lights on in the house at once. Its not as much as you think. Plus its only one. 1000w would make a dent in the bill but it wont raise a flag unless you have a few going. My back pouch light is a 400w HID so is every house on the block.

No worries fellas.

I wouldn't advise that kind of light. A blue color spectrum is what you want, not red. Get as close to 7000k or so. You can give it a shot with the light you have, but I wouldn't.

I also have a fluorescent light hanging over head as well so its getting some blue.

If you say red wont work I will switch it out. I just wanted to try to get a dense pin set.

Have you used a halide before?  Because other people here have with good results.  I haven't personaly, but it works.  Yes, they are a lower kelvin temperature than the 6,500kelvin range we like, but they're bright.

You guys could each so easily search for these answers.........really.

just set it by a window a few hours a day natural light is awesome for pinsets in my opinion and the easiest and cheapest

6,500kelvin.  Blue-spectrum.  They do make good 6,500k LED ropes that some cultivators here have used on the outsides of tubs and greenhouses; they make LED ropes that are more than 20' long.  But a 150w compact fluorescent with a nice reflector is my first pick ("daylight" bulb). ~Pixie~

yeah thats what i was thinkin. i didnt know if a led could really bennifit the substrate cause its not like bright like daylight. i mean i know the color has nothing to do with light rather its bright or red led or blue or w.e but idk but i would think brightness of it has something to do it with it. like for pins to form and whatnot.. id probably go with a bulb then the led. but something i think i wanna try out.

Ok for one you all are missing one thing here. He has red light coming off. This wold be a High Pressure Sodium light, not a Metal Halide. Metal Halide lights have a blue spectrum. HPS are used to flower weed, MH are used in veg growth. But seriously. Just use a 4' floro with a "Daylight" pair of bulbs in it. They will still fruit at your temps. Plus you cannot force a dense pin set. Your genetics provide that and if you have grown out a poor fruiter from the start, then you will know. Lights have nothing to do with how many pins you will have. In other words, why go overkill when you don't know what you have? Besides look through the past posts and do what works. Why fix something if it is not broke is my .02

Cool, I didn't know there was such a range available.  I thought there was like a 3,500-6,something range.  I'd still go fluorescent though. ~Pixie~

Veda, are you sure they sell that range of bulb?  I am looking at a fairly new hydroponics catalog that doesn't have that range.  Do you have a link? ~Pixie~

Veda is right they do you just have to know where to look. The point here is it's wasteful very wasteful personally I don't have money to throw away especially when it is of no benefit.
