Rhizopus
    #10621069 - 07/04/09 01:35 PM (15 years, 6 months ago)

I've been fighting trich on my casing for the past 5 days now, and now that it has seemed to stall, I've discovered what looks like rhizopus. It's almost like cobweb mold but has lots of little brown spheres coming up from long pole like structures. So I looked around a little on here, and didn't find any ways to cure it, or get rid of it. I dont have many casings in progress besides this one, so if possible, I would definitely love to save it. Pinheads just began forming on it.. Thanks for the help guys  :peace:

Sorry bro :undecided: , I just sprayed a hydrated lime solution on the casing so the camera definitely won't pick up the little details you would need to see.. I should have taken a picture before I sprayed it.. If it comes back I will take some pictures for sure. Right now the reproductive parts have gone away (the brown spheres I was speaking of), all that's left is cobweb like strands throughout parts of the casing layer.. And prismism, I thought you could fight it with a hydrated lime solution?

I heard you can salt it but yea trich usually spores and kills the rest of the myc eventually by the time you spot it. watch out with it cause the salt will kill the myc wherever it touches as well.

I would throw it away. Mold is our number one enemy. You don't want it floating around your home!

Alright guys, I've decided to throw it out.. Starting some new casings today, this time I'm going to sterilize the casing layer in the microwave for 15 min, let it cool off, then another 15 min. Hopefully this will keep me from running into problems with contamination again.. I didn't sterilize the casing layer the last two times, which were my first attempts at grain and casings. So wish me luck  :scaryshroom:.. As far as cleaning goes, I should use a 3% Hydrogen Peroxide solution right?

Microwave sterilization isn't really possible. Better to use a PC for sterilization. But you might be able to pasteurize your stuff with stove or oven.

Don't use peroxide for anything but fighting cobweb mold.

as doc said..do not use the microwave..that will only lead to more contamination.
you need to pasteurize your casing materials.
good luck man.

Pasturise your casing layer, and be sure to ph balance it. fighting trich is usually a loosing battle, more often than not just spreading the spores.

You can slow it down by using a salt paste on the infected area and an inch beyond, which is usufull during a flush. It wont stop it though.

I've used a mic to pasteurize 6 peat/verm casings ever. It never contaminated on me and I will never do it again, because it is just awful procedure. The temp ranges of the casing material are probibly so varied that less than 1/3 of it is properly pasteurized and the rest is over/under heated. I likely owe the non-contamination to fluke/lime.

As for cleaning whatever is dirty out. Use soap and water to wash the spores off and 70% alcohol to kill any traces of living mold. Then soap and water to scrub it clean again (in necessary).

haha I meant if there is bio-matter still clinging to the side. However you make a point that scrubbing should have been done during the first washing and there should be no need for it.
