GMO "Killer" mushroom to end heroin trade

Tajik and Uzbek researchers have developed a genetically-modified "killer mushroom" that could wipe out the heroin industry in neighbouring Afghanistan, Tajik biologist Shavkat Saidmuradov told newspapers on Saturday.
Experiments financed by the United Nations as part of its war on drugs have shown the efficacy of the "polyspore papavericide" in destroying the opium poppy on which heroin is based, said Saidmuratov, a collaborator with the Tajik drugs squad.
Tests were carried out 100 kilometres north of Dushanbe at an altitude of 2 500 metres, in conditions involving sharp fluctuations in temperature and a high exposure to the sun's ultraviolet rays, he said.
"Opium poppy seeds were sown over half a hectare, and then the mushroom was spread over the area," he recounted.
It has no harmful effects on the environment or other plants
The experiment showed that the "killer mushroom" was particularly effective in the early stages of the poppy's growth, "cutting off its development, so that it withered away in 10 to 15 days."
The Tajik presidency's spokesperson on drugs, Avaz Yuldashev, described these results as "extremely important".
"There is very little opium produced in (the former Soviet republics of) central Asia, but this method could be used in Afghanistan which is one of the world's greatest producers and poppy fields cover thousands of acres," he said.
Yuldashev said there were more than 60 laboratories in northern Afghanistan devoted to transforming opium into heroin.
A further benefit of the mushroom was that it had no harmful effects on the environment or other plants, Saidmuradov said, citing tests on 180 other species of plants, vegetables, cereals and herbs.
Most of the heroin that finds its way to western Europe is produced in Afghanistan, passing through the countries of Tajikistan and Russia. -- source

it would be much easier to just make all drugs legal, dammit! Even without heroin, there is always cocaine and 100 other drugs. Plus they can easily make synthethic chemicals that give you the same effects as heroin.

Old news. These are already in use, but kill all plant life in an area and do not tend to spread.
For the past 4 years they've been working on developing a genetically modified strain of Fusarium oxysporum that only infects marijuana and hemp plants. ( well, until it mutates and starts attacking wheat and tomato crops...) Yes, the Drug War is funding biological weapons, and their ultimate goal is a contagious agent that will spread to the point of total ecocide- the extinction of the Cannabis genus worldwide. Probably an impossible goal- as resistant strains of weed will surely evolve- but it would still greatly raise prices and set back cannabis breeding by 50 years.

i wholeheartedly agree! jeezus, this papaver killing shroom has already been released if it is capable of producing spores. one good gust of wind in this area they were referring to is all that it takes to eventually get this mushroom spread globally. what a perversion of the beautiful mushroom!

I hate to say, but as much as I hate drugs like heroin, this is pretty out of line. Not only will this destroy heroin, but alkaloids like codeine and morphine will have to be synthetically produced. Heroin will also begin to be made synthetically, and the whole heroin problem will start over again, but this heroin will be better than the extractions, as people will be motivated to spend the time and money making it synthetically. It CAN be done, but it just isn't too safe.
