Is it ok that some of the rye that I simered is split open? I've heard that i should try to pick those out from on person, but other sources say its fine and to leave them.

Myc grows faster on un-popped grains, it will grow but it will be slower. More times than not you will have more split grains after you PC them, so I guess I recommend taking them out. GL, CH

If it's just a few percent of the total volume you're ok.

Yeah I'll just have to be a bit more careful when watching the simmering. Thanks for the advice.

I have had no problems with busted rye, but this is what works for me and it gets perfect results.
RR made this.
Soak 1 cup for every jar in a large pot for 12-24 hours, this will hydrate your rye. But before you soak drain the water a few times till you get the dust and brown out of it. Then soak.
After you soak put it on the stove and then crank the heat and bring to a boil for 10min.
Next poor into a strainer and let the steam evaporate off and let dry for a few hours.
RR said take a piece of toilet paper put a spoon full of your rye on it for 15sec, and if the paper is dry your good to go. Fill each jar 3/4ths the way up.
Wet rye slows growth
Dry rye slows growth
Perfect rye accelerates growth. Good luck.

Never add cool rye to boiling water than makes the canals burst. If you soak it, you shouldn't get even one burst carnal.

I have been doing RR tek which can be found Here I would suggest to do this to the "T" if you want success.
Note after rinsing, Make sure you fill it back up with The hottest tap water you have.
As for busted Kernels,Like Psuper said,If it is a low volume there is nothing to worrie about.
