my first grow
    #10614655 - 07/03/09 08:46 AM (15 years, 6 months ago)

Hey guys, its my first time posting, although I've lurked for quite a while now. I currently have 3 500ml jars of amazonian colonizing (BRF + verm). At first I was just going to birth the cakes, dunk and roll and toss them into the fc, but now it seems to me that this would be a waste of the larger cakes and i am considering other options.

At first I thought that crumbling and casing would be logical (probably 50/50 casing), but now I am wondering about possibly slicing the cakes and  dunk/rolling them. I know i may be getting ahead of myself here as this is my first grow, but i want to try and get a decent yield, even if it is just to impress my friends.

I guess what i am asking is, if you were in my situation, what would you do to get the most out of these cakes?

I would just dunk and roll if its your first grow yeilds might not be as good but its pretty fool proof and you can play around with other teks later. Plus if you get fruits you could always print and/or clone so you never have to worry about getting spores again.

Well I was in your situation, & I chose to crumble my cakes 60/40 of coir / verm with a touch of coffee grounds. I recommended you do this, if you think your up for it. Adding coir / verm gives the mushy more room to grow & more food to eat.

Keep it simple, dunk and roll'em!
From pint size cakes I usually harvest around 60-70g for the first flush...
Not that impressing, but I think these look allright:

First flush from that cake was 66g and IIRC the 2nd was close to 80g.

I'd stick to strict BRF for the first grow, then just dunk and roll the cakes.  This is mainly for the purpose of acquainting yourself with the life cycle of the mushroom.

I'm currently consolidating my first set of jars, gonna d and r.  Have 2 LC's currently incubating to use for my next attempt which will most likely be spawning to a coir/verm/coffee bulk, then cased with 50/50 in a monotub.  That's the plan anyway...

The only reason I bring that up is cause I could probably go straight to bulk spawning, but I think it's best to go about things the right way and learn about colonizing, fruiting etc. from BRF.

P.S. From what I've read, yields won't be much improved over d and r with a simple crumble and case.  If you want more shrooms most people say spawning to bulk is the way to go.

cakes are not that great for use as spawn.
for this grow fruit them as cakes and when you want to impress your friends then dont grow with brf/verm.
if you want to impress your friends you are going to have to start with grains then spawn to bulk like coir or poo.

Ah, but grains require a pressure cooker, which is expensive and my bitches have been holding onto my green... Thinking I'm gonna hafta break out the pimpstick  :whack:

Don't grow to impress anyone...  ANYONE. You will feel accomplished without trying to show off.
