Light is light as far as organisms that have circadian rhythms (12/12) go.. However it's best if you got a light source with a color temperature of > 5,000 kelvin (blue/white) than say, incandescent light (red) - it penetrates the surface more and helps to form pins better.

So to answer your question more directly, the wattage of your bulb (and it's height) does not factor when it's all on light frequency.

It's really not too important. Just make sure it's the light is shining on the surface from any distance really.

The lights I use are 8,000 k and work great, just about any fluorescent bulbs will work fine but the best are plant lights or the ones that say something like "full Spectrum" on the box. As long as there's enough light to read you're good. 7 feet would work fine but it doesn't really matter that much. The best light is always the real thing. you can't really beat indirect sunlight. More important is making sure the only light they get is strait from above.

Try to go for "daylight" bulbs these are highest in the blue spectrum. I would personally dedicate that light to your FC as in placing right above it. Within three feet would be best. Not only lights intensity but also duration can have a direct influence on pin count.

As Hyphae said, brighter is better.  Place it as close to the terrarium as you can without producing extra heat.
