Fully Colonized?
    #10613566 - 07/03/09 02:41 AM (15 years, 6 months ago)

Hey, first time grower here and everything is well on its way. My only question is how can I tell when the jars are ready to be taken out and into the terrarium. Some of them looks completely white from the outside...should i take them out now or wait a couple more days?

Thats right, will be 100% coverage on the visable outter layer, don't worry about under the lid, if everywhere else is sound you will be there.

As in the pic some are more colinised than others the one on the far right Is pretty much there. Theres many pics of this in the forums.

you need to wait one additional week after the jars go completely white.  during this week the inside of the cakes will colonize, it's called consolidation.

After you think it's 100% it's a good idea to wait a extra day or two to let the inside finish.

I consider three days about right depending on how fast the cake colonized in general. The reason we wait is for full colonization which is a major pinning trigger then when combined with the drop in co2 through the introduction of fresh air exchanges gives the best trigger response. I also like to use light which is also a major pinning trigger but some here have taken it out of the equation as does a drop in temps. All of these are what occur in nature to induce pinning so personally I prefer to manipulate each and combine those together for the most dramatic change in environmental conditions it is just something I enjoy doing and it works for me.
