Most common noob mistakes!!!!!!
    #10611844 - 07/02/09 08:03 PM (15 years, 6 months ago)

#1 Keeping foil on pf jars with a dry verm layer.  No need for tape or foil with a dry verm layer.  Cover the entire lid with foil to sterilize,  when they cool take it off.

#2 Incubating at 86f,  growth slows after 85f and room temps are fine.

#3 Not checking the dates on teks.  Many are out dated.

#4 Ask for advice but don't follow what is told.

#5 Not following teks,  don't change anything until you know what you are doing.

#6 Getting substrates and PF cake too wet,  mushrooms are 90% water but myc doesn't colonize wet substrates well.

#7 Not waiting a week after colonization,  be patient!

#8 Not using a hygrometer,  you need to know the humidity.

#9 Buying Myco kits!

#10 Inoculating jars while they are still warm.

Here's what I feel is the top ten,  I will try to add helpful links next to each one later.
Good luck to all the noobs and don't make these mistakes.
CH

hey, i have a question for you. Ive grown before, back when PF was in business, and im new to this dunk and roll tek. Today, I birthed a cake about 2 days after full colonization. I saw one little pin forming so I decided to go ahead and dunk her. Ive read that you shouldnt do it if pins are formed but also that I should wait a week, like you said, after colonization to ensure that its ok to dunk. you think ill be good?

Waiting a week should be the minimum,  unless the pin starts to rot.
It is fine to dunk and roll even with pins,  just be gentle.  Most invetro pins will survive a dunk n roll.
Be sure to rinse your cake after the dunk,  then roll in dry verm and mist.

CH

Not shaking the syringe!

Understanding the difference between near saturation and saturation.

Not doing the necessary searches! The thing with searching is on your way to finding your answer you most always find answers to questions you haven't even thought of yet it's a wonderful thing!

Not truly understanding the process before attempting.

Beginners as well as some seasoned pros often overlook certain subtle ulterior benefits of some techniques.

Not rinsing WBS enough before soaking.

Cultivating mushrooms is not all about growing and harvesting mushrooms it is the journey of the experience that truly makes us grow. Look deeper and you will see more!

Mixed info on Point 1,

Keeping the Outer Solid layer of foil on PF cakes is bad but this implies you remove all layers of foil, which isnt correct..or is it?

http://www.fungifun.org/English/Pftek says to put the foil back on, I was told to take it off and leave the layers with the holes, Now you're saying to take it off completly...

No wonder folk get confused..

I use one piece of foil and I leave it on loosely after inoculating to write pertinent info on it don't hurt a thing it makes a great dust shield. I don't tape holes either but if you do leave the tape off after inoculating I've seen more jars stall than not when people leave the tape on.

the dry verm layer is a protective barrier so no foil or tape or anything is necassary
