Try lifting the cakes and you can judge moisture level by how much they weigh.  It takes a few grows to get the feel for it, but next time you birth/dunk and roll, pay attention to how heavy the cakes are.

Yup, that's the way I do it. Grew some Texas on cakes. Crazy mushrooms - huge gnarly stalks in clusters, and solid - no sponginess. But they suck the cakes dry each time they grow a cluster. Never seen anything like them before. Pick a cake up to test and it's light as a feather! Dunk time!

rr & hyphae, thanks for the guidance. i do believe my issue to be too much moisture as opposed to not enough. i guess i have to work on getting my misting down pat.

Read my pinning strategy it works IF YOU FOLLOW IT. GL in the future my friend!!!
Psilocybear is a great example of how not to do it! Sorry Psilocybear but that is a prime example and I do appreciate the pics so others can see and better understand what way too much looks like.

Well, I'm glad I served a purpose! Thansk to everyone for their input. Hyphae what are the visual signs that a cake looks waterlogged?? Is there a way to un-waterlog them?? Maybe it's too late for 5 of those cakes but three of them were birthed and dunked about 48 hours ago!! How do I know how much msiting is allright??

you'll be able to see the moisture on the inside glass of the jars if you are waterlogged. Also look at the bottoms of the jars and see if any water is pooling. I ran into this issue my last experiment. Oh, damn I just noticed you've birthed them.

If they're soft and spongy, they're waterlogged.  Just back off on misting and let them dry out.  The big thing is to make sure they're isolated from the perlite so they're not drawing up water from there.  That's a much more frequent cause of waterlogging than overmisting.

And don't use foil! Use jar lids or something similar.

Hmm does spongy mean being wet if a grab them by the sides?? I have aluminum sheets separating them from the perlite.. is that enough??

You can see from the mycelium it is "depressed" or cupped and shiny wet. Simply stop mist your cakes for a day or two while still providing plenty of FAE. Lift a cake up does it see kind of heavy for it's size? One really needs to develop a feel for how they feel best way is to note their weight when first placed into the FC. Fan then mist lightly 2-3 squirts above the cakes letting the mist fall on them. Misting several light mistings are much better than fewer heavier mistings always! If FAE is good then maybe you'll need 4-5 squirts? This is the part where you come into play and develop your own judgment. GL

OK, much appreciated!! One last thing... If I don't mist this couple of days, won't the humidity % go down??
