I am not a mycologist
    #10605799 - 07/01/09 08:11 PM (15 years, 6 months ago)

but seriously after hunting for morels last season..I couldn't believe all the different kinds of mushrooms that i saw out in my woods.  I know it sounds wrong and dangerous but i am tempted to try and identify a hallucinogenic mushroom..I mean they do grow wild..and some grow in grasslands(not always on the cow dung) so really give me your blunt opinions.

I've grown enough to know what the one kind look like. I'd pick 'em if I saw 'em.

i wouldnt, and considering how many verietys of cubes there are that all look slightly different theres bound to be a look a like thats either not edible or oculd be highly poisenous.

If your huntng youw ant to note wher eyou found it, what its habitat is, take a spore print and note the colour that the flesh bruises.

You can then take this to the hunting forum for an ID. Generaly purple/black spores along with blue bruising can be a good sign of an active species but beware there are species that bruise blue that arnt edible, though i thnk they drop rusty brown spores.

there is little exceptions like redspore which drops rusty brown spores but i dont know if that veriety grows wild.

Best bet is getting an ID, reading books on the subject reading lots of information.

Dude ... don't do that. Grow the shit. It's not that hard. You just have to be anal about sterility in the beginning. Once you have a stronger understanding of how to grow you'll be just fine.

I'm NOT saying that it's simple or anything, I'm just saying that it's really not that hard to do as long as you understand how.

I thought the same thing before deciding whether to grow or not. The thing is … you can put your ass in the hospital quicker than you can say “oops… I fucked up”.

Oh, yeah- OP should grow them. I was just saying that in the right place, at the right time, they can be found.

The beginning is the hardest part.  Hunting down all the supplies, deciding what method, jar lid, fruiting chamber, etc.  After the first spawning, it is really stupid simple and cheap, and you'll get waaaaaay more than you could really ever hope to find.  You can also combine the best of both worlds and do outdoor beds.  The best part is you don't have to pasteurize the poop outside.  Just dump some old hpoo in a shallow bed, mix in some fresh grain spawn(doesn't take much), cover with some old leaves, pine straw, grass clippings, whatever.  Then water and wait.  Then you get to 'hunt' your own personal patch whenever it fruits.
:sip:
As for the quality and yields?  Let's just say my outdoor puts my indoor to shame.  Given some of my results, I'm thinking of going Johnny Appleseed with this shit before the weather cools off.  It's absolutely no contest.  Outdoor FTW.

You ever seen that movie Constantine.  Well they pass into hell several times.  In hell there are melting human bodies, in your tub are melting mushroom bodies.  Your tub had passed into mushroom hell.

Yea when it comes to growing i have been considering it. but as far as getting the supplies...like the spore syringe and whatever goes into that syringe that produces boomers is completely out of my league i just don't even know where to pick up any thing like that.

but yea thanks for the replies and my bad this really should have been posted in the hunting boards.

If you decide you want it bad enough, you'll find it easily, even in one of the three "no-no" states.
