incubation help
    #1060541 - 11/17/02 07:58 PM (14 years, 10 months ago)

I feel dumb for asking this, but im having many incubation problems. I have recntly moved in with a roomamte. My room has a 5x20' attic space adjacent to it with a door connecting it to my room. In here its pretty cold due to the climate in indiana. I have a small stryofoam cooler in there with a 50 watt aquarium heater inside a 9 inch jar (its big enough) i have a few holes on the lid of the cooler and around the sides. I have this becuase my humidity is around 85-95% at all times. I cant get my temp above the high 70's. I dont know what to do. If i cover the holes which could raise the temp the humidity would be like 99% which could promote mold growth. Any suggestions. Heating pad?

my dood uses that exact set up.. even though there is high humidity, that doesn't effect the growth. if i were you i would either seal the holes or get a new cooler. the only problem you may face as i know, is because it is so wet in there, i would advise putting an aluminum foil covering on the lids so that when the condensation falls off the top it just runs down off it onto the bottom..i don't know if you have a temp gage. but at wal-mart you can get a pyrex digital gage that has a cord that you can run into the cooler and just set the gage on top. my dood keeps a 82 degree constant and other than that initial problem of water gettiing onto the lids, (wich is fixable, as i said) things are great.

good luck,
ribbit

i completely did not mention that there has been no sight of mold in this set up!

so if i wrap up the jars good there shouldtn be a problem. Saran wrap would work good i guess so you could see into them.

Humidity is 110% irrelevant during incubation.

actually, you could use seran wrap, however, this is just my thought, im going to recommend aluminum foil, i believe it will work better for 2 reasons

1. it will keep any moisture from getting into the holes

2. if you use a big enough piece, you can wrap the whole jar in it, which my dood is to keep the light from messing with the progression of mycelium growth, my dood liked to check them about 45 times per day. lol... so that is just something that my dood is experimenting with, to keep the jars protected from over light exposure.

good luck,
ribbit

o ok i just always thought high humdity and temp could lead to contams growing in the incubation chamber which could find themselve in your jars

why dont you use a disinfectant misting. mix a small amount of peroxide in the water to be used for moisture(be it in misting, or liquid in perlite),

i dunno, i heard of people doing this. do a search, and see what you come up with

You don't, but you can spray your incubator down with lysol or a bleach solution, just to keep it clean.
