Too many holes in Shotgun FC?
    #10604959 - 07/01/09 05:24 PM (15 years, 6 months ago)

I really think I may be having humidity problems with my FC--or at least, I did a few days ago.

The 4 cakes I put in the soonest seem to have been drying out quite a bit. Since I placed them into the FC, I've taped up a few holes and also raised the light a bit higher (it was throwing off a lot of heat).

Here are some pics showing the number of holes and spacing on my FC. Are there too many here?

How thick is your perlite layer? How often are you misting/fanning?

looks like a few too many to me. This is how I have mine setup and it retains 90%+ humidity.

My perlite layer is about 3.5 inches and I mist/fan every 4 hours or so.

try taping some of the holes that are at the top of where the perlite is and just above the line...you may have some of that humidity wicking out as soon as moisture from the perlite atomizes into the air above it...am I right, experts?

I used a 1/4" drill bit.

I did mine exactly as RR says in his videos, and those holes look to be the same size 1/4" drill bit... I haven't used my SGFC yet, but the only thing I can see wrong with this guy's setup is that the holes may be a bit too close together.  I used a ruler to make sure all of my holes were as close to 2 inches apart as possible.

It also seems this guy was watching me at walmart cause he got the same exact tub that I'm using 96qt.  It's huge man, I'm expecting 3.5" of perlite won't be enough to keep that thing humid, so I'm planning to use 5 or 6 inches myself.

I usually do 1/4 inch holes every 2 inches or soo.. Also I use to do about 4-5 inches of perlite

I taped up a few more holes and am adding some perlite now. I'll post again later about how things are going.

Thanks for all the advice!

Yup. Exactly like that. 1/4" holes every 2" or so. Around 4" of perlite. Shotguns are trouble-free and they make mushrooms!

hey man, i had the same prob, i taped up about every other hole until my humidity reached 99%.  then i untaped holes until the humidity started to drop.  is your FC raised by anything? I use soda cans on each corner, b/c you need airflow from underneath to wick moisture up through the perlite into the FC.  Good Luck man.

Mine is actually sitting on a wire shelf, so air flow is fine.

I didn't take quite a methodical an approach as you did to taping up my holes--I used wide tape to cover entire patches of holes in areas where they were way too close together. Maybe I'll start pulling tape here and there to let some air in.

The ones that seemed to be drying out were in there for 4 days. I'd been misting every 4 hours at least, sometimes more often.

The first clue that they were drying out was their appearance. They weren't "glistening" like the other ones were, and the edges around the top (what used to be the bottom when they were in the jars) were "sharper," whereas they were softer on the other cakes--as if they had dried up too much.

Finally, I gently tapped a few of the cakes, and the ones that seemed dry felt harder when I tapped them--they didn't "give" as much. Then I very gently squeezed a few of the cakes (clean hands) and the dry ones were harder--just as when I tapped them, they didn't "give".

Did you dunk the cakes before putting them in the fc?

Dunk for 24 hours next time.

It looks like you drilled about twice as many holes as the tek calls for.  You can make up for it by extra misting.

Damn, I was gonna say that about the dunking. Can't really top it if RR said it. He's totally right though, I experimented with different dunking times and 24 hours has provided the best results.
