Glass terrarium?
    #10603842 - 07/01/09 02:15 PM (15 years, 6 months ago)

A friend just got rid of their snake and gave me a nice sized glass terrarium. I was thinking of using it as a fruiting chamber for cakes and trays. I am a little worried about FAE, as there is no way for me to make holes on the sides. My only choice is to vent through the top of the terrarium while trying to hold humidity. Do you think I will have FAE problems, humidity problems? I have a tropic air humidifier and also wanted to lay down some perlite on the bottom of the terrarium.

Can't grab a pic at the moment, but I'd say it's at least a 20gal terrarium. I have a huge box fan that is real powerful, could I just run that in the room 24/7?

People used glass terrariums for years. It will work, it just may not be ideal. If I was you I'd just go down to Wal-Mart and get a nice Sterilite or Rubbermaid for $7 and be done with it.

Get yourself a humidifier/air exchanger designed for reptile terrariums. You'll still need some perlite or other way to increase the RH some, but it provides more than enough FAE.

I think I'll just ditch this terrarium then. I just figured it was a waste for him to throw it out, figured I might be able to use it.

You can use it! This is was sucks about this site, everyone thinks that things are best thier way. No. Find what works for you. You can use that terrarium. Get a pump and bubblewand.

Put down a bubblewand/stone (hooked up to a pump of course) and cover with perlite. There is a good tek if you go to the Fruiting Chambers page.

Don't ditch what you have cause someone says thier way is better. Mushroom cultivation is about finding what works for you.

For all the hassle and expense of pumps etc, you could just pick up a tub for a couple of $ and save yourself the ballache.

Being savvy and thrifty = GOOD
Cutting corners = BAD

Do it once and do it right, IMO.

Put reptiles in there.

Yeah. Tubs are good, I won't deny that at all. I even prefer monotubs and picked up two more today.

If you want to use that terrarium for mushies you can, not only as a fruiting chamber but for whatever you want. Keep it, it's good. Yeah it would cost a bit more to use it as a fruiting chamber, but you can definitely make a gnarly FC out of it. So do what you please.

Terrariums are also good for fish, reptiles, growing other plants etc, etc.

Possibility is endless.
