Hows this WBS tek sound?
    #10603340 - 07/01/09 12:37 PM (15 years, 6 months ago)

I'm going to prep the WBS (walmart-penningtons) like usual.  Put it into 1/2 pint jars for sterilization.  When it's done I'm going to use very sterile technique and transfer the jars to gallon ziplock freezer bags.  I'm going to inject PE into the bags and seal the injection site with a band-aid.  (I've gotten entire bags of BRF to colonize...slowly....using this same method so I'm confident with the WBS.)
Then I'm going to pop holes in the top of the bag with a pin and cover the holes with athletic tape so the bags can breath.

Mix bags at 20-40% colonization and at 100%, birth them into tupperwares.  I will birth them onto a 1/2 inch layer of 50/50 and put a 1/2 inch layer of 50/50 on top of that.  I will cover with foil and let sit until mycelium pops through.  I will then patch and put the tupperwares into my shotgun FC.

I know there are better ways (Spawning to bulk) but with the materials I have right now this would cost $0 and that's what it's all about for me right now.

Hows it sound?

You've skipped over the important part, I guess. Prepping the grain.
Why do you want the jars inside of bags instead of doing it like regular folks?

Sounds like a failure waiting to happen.

I don't know about you but I have trouble with g2g if I try to do it outside my flow hood. Transferring whole jars of grain to a zip lock then injecting them sounds like a contamination paradise.

You should make the jars then inject the jars, once they are colonized you can open them and transfer them to your Tupperware or what ever you want to fruit them from.

I've succeeded in doing this with BRF and those bags took foreeever to colonize...but it all worked.  I live in a brand new house and have had 0 contams in this hobby so far, I'm very clean.

The reason I want to do it in bags is because I only have 1/2 pint jars.  In bags I could fit like 10 of those jars and then use the jars for BRF cakes with leftover spores.

I just don't want to spend the money on extra jars.  I know I can do this all sterile.

Does WBS do well as a substrate cased in 50/50?  Not going to spawn to anything.

If you're set on having only half pint jars and never spawning, there's really no reason why PF cakes won't work. You don't really gain anything. Cased WBS will fruit, but it's just not that exciting.

BRF is like 3x the price of WBS.  And WBS will colonize a loooot faster in the bulk bags I'm talking about.

I think I see benefits to it but I'm still a noob.

I would be willing to spawn but I really don't have access to any poo.  If there was a cheap readily available spawn besides poo I would be willing to just knock the jars up and spawn them to it..any ideas?

Okay.  I broke down and bought 12 quart jars.  My problem is they won't fit in my PC so I'll have to steam sterilize them in a pot w/ lid.  This will work fine.

Thanks for steering me in the right direction.

Will the quarts of WBS cased with 50/50 be a good substrate>?

You have to PC WBS, you can not steam sterilize them!

Haha, I just searched and learned that Cyber, thanks.

I returned the quart jars and bought OVEN BAGS!  I'll PC the bags and inoculate into them....I think I found my answer

You bought and returned a case of jars and bought bags, all in 30 minutes?
I call BS.

I live one block away from my grocery store.

Why would I lie about that?

Anyways, I'm currently straining the living hell out of my WBS with hot water.  I will let it soak from about 3pm today until about 2am tonight.  Then I'll strain again and put in my oven bags, seal them leaving a small opening for GE and PC for 60 min.  When they cool I'll seal them completely and pop holes in the top with a pin and secure with some sort of filter for GE.  I'll inoculate with PE in a couple days when it arrives.

That's my plan as of now.

Critique?

THANKS GUYS

Simmer after you soak, it'll drain better.
And 60 minutes probably isn't long enough, especially with a small PC.

You can probably do a quart jar sideways, try that too. Doesn't sound like much, but you can cook two or three in a day easy, your cycle time is way shorter than with a big PC.

Alright sounds good.  I'm going at it right now.  I'll make a log after inoculation...it seems not a lot of people have luck with what I'm attempting so hopefully I'll be able to contribute something.

Thanks again doc

Critique... make the bags with gas exchange before you pressure cook them. That was you are sure that they are sealed when you handle them. I would think that you may have problems with letting in contams if you pc first, then try to rig up some sort of gas exchange, on already sterilized grain...

does electrical tape hold up in a pc?  id think not.

i might have to just sterilize a needle, use it to poke holes, then cover holes with double layer athletic tape.

cant think of any other way to make the athletic tape hold during PC.
