liquid culture pr?

got liquid culture been going on a week or 2 but the mycellium is long and strady is this normal? its not lil white clumps just like wispy lines of mycellium it looks like? contam? longer it sits it'll ball up and is this what i want or not? polfyill lid and using .5 pint jar with inverted dome lid incubating at like 80 and tinfoil around jar to keep light out. also anyone post pics of karo tek jars?

Yea thats normal for pr. Its the highly ryzmorphic(sp?) mycelium that looks like strands. I think if you add a marble to the jar it helps break up the mycelium "balls" But do so before you innoculate

going to put some chipped up ceramic stones in there next time or chipped up glass to breakup strands before pcing. hopefully the strainds will fit in an 18 ga needle and not clog.

just out of raw curiosity...since ceramic is porus, would it harbor contaminates of a sort?

dont know i will prolly just stick with glass. people have used ceramic broken up for boiling stones though thats what i hear.

also whats the longest/shortest 100% ready to birth colonization using liquid culture say 1cc per jar?

Try adding a 1/4 teaspoon of nutritional yeast. It will make that mycelium grow like crazy. It will make the Karo tek turn a bit caramel colour but don't worry abou that it is normal. What you will notice is that the mycelium will start to grow a lot faster and in large clumps. And yes put that marble or some broken glass in there to stir up.

Could I use just regular yeast used in coocking? If so can it still be sterelized?
