My first agar questions

I want to try to use the grocery store agar tek found in the link here: http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/7081785/page/1 I am wondering if I can use POWDERED agar in the same ratio that the agar in the link is used? Also the addition of a little yeast? I have active dry yeast that I use for homemade bread. will that suffice? Lastly, I am a little confused in general about the cooking and PC'ing of the mixture. (caramelizing/crystalizing the honey) If anyone has a good link that will help clear this up for me, thanks. I wouldn't be so concerned but it is a 90 mile trip one way for agar.

You could leave the honey out if you had malt or dextrose, then you wouldn't have to worry about carmelization at all. But it's only a teaspoon in the whole batch, it'll be ok.

Ok, Lets start off with skip the yeast. It is not needed. I don't use powdered potatoes ether, you are wanting the starches not the actual potato.
The recipe I use is as follows
Boil 300g of potatoes in 1000ml of water tell soft (about 30 min if you dice the potatoes) run it through a strainer and put the potatoes in a bowl, a little salt pepper and butter and you have a snack.
Run the liquid through a coffee filter then bring back up to 1000ml with tap water. Put it back on the stove and Add 20g of agar and 15g of dextrose (Yes you can use 1tsp of honey in place of the dextrose) Stir until the agar dissolves on low heat. I add some food coloring to ID the agar but that is just me, you dont have to add it.
Pour into jars and PC for 15 min at 15psi.
take from the PC and Pour into plates before it cools.
This is the agar I use, I dont grind it because it will melt in the hot water. No need to grind it.

And it works great

Thank you so much. It really clears things up. I just couldn't wrap my head around it. I will look for malt or dextrose today when I buy groceries. Are they in powdered form or are they a 'syrup'? Thanks again guys.

They are powdered and you can get both at your local home brew shop. Malt is "Light Malt Extract" and Destrose is called "Priming Sugar"

Yeah, powdered malt and/or dextrose make it simple. I'd use yeast or potatoes too, but I'm just like that.

Got a dextrose story? Shoot me an email, I'm leaving for work in a few, no Shroomery access.
