Tyvek and Gas Exchange

OK, so i have a previous post up about my problem with colonization, but I haven't had many useful responses. I have had about 12 trays in an incubator for 6 days, and have had very little growth. My temperature in the incubator is about 78, and my substrate is a coir/verm/coffee mix at field capacity. At first i thought that moisture could be the problem because i spotted a dry spot on one of the trays. However, after closer inspection none of the trays had anything like that in it, so I'm thinking its just that one dry spot.
At this point I'm thinking that Gas Exchange is what is slowing my process. Although i have foil only loosely placed on the tops of my trays, the lid of the incubator is sealed up. Today i decided to slant the lid and leave two large openings for gas exchange. However, I'm worried about contams and was thinking about just creating two large holes, covered with tyvek, in the incubator lid. Tyvek alows Gas Exchange, but not FAE, right? Would this idea work in concept?
I never have had this problem with coir colonizing before, i used a 5:1 ratio with my spawn, and I'm worried about losing this project to contams with the slow colonization. Any suggestions are needed and appreciated, i was also thinking about sealing the foil up tight on the trays and just poking holes in them for GE... please, help me out!

I believe you have answered you're own question GE is very likely to be the cause of you're slowed myc. growth I would use Tyvek or polyfill holes on the tops...I think this will solve you're problem I'm like you I worry about contams all the time...so by just poking holes you give them a way into you're uncolonised sub..hope this helped a little.......e

Or open the lid and let it breathe every other day.

Im hoping GE is the problem, i just wanted a confirmation that this sounds right, and that Tyvek would be a good resolution to the problem.

I cover my 6quart trays very tightly and poke a lot of small holes in the foil with the pointy edge of a razor blade. Then, I cover all the holes with micro-pore tape. You could use fewer holes and not cover them at all.
I like a higher spawn ratio than 1:5, but I know that's a bit more work if you got twelve trays going. Best of luck. ~Pixie~

That sounds like a bacterial contamination. I hope they're not all contamed. ~Pixie~

Bad smell, bad news. Isolate and then terminate with extreme prejudice.

78 is kinda low, but at higher temps your bacteria would have been worse.
