I see at MYGTECH a casing starter. Let's say you buy a single pre-sterilized grain jar and use it for a casing tek, how does one implement the casing starter in this process? thnx

"The MYG mushroom casing starter is our original secret ingredient! Our casing starter is important part of our MYG mushroom kits which enhances performance and productivity and is now available to you to use in your own mycology projects. We use an exclusive strain of nematodes to increase mycelium colonization of your casing soil and prevent crop infestation by combating mushroom flies or contaminants."
You don't need this.

Hmm... but why not, exactly?
I ask this only because a single grain jar is for preparing a grain casing, and the starter is described as a casing starter, so . . . ?

Sounds like they mixed in some hydrated lime and got the ph up to about 8.
Most likely just a waste of money, unless you are just totally lazy (like me) and like overpaying for goods (not like me).

That's a fact, Jack.
You don't need to case at all- but if you do, you sure don't need any expensive secret ingredients. It's all laid out on this site for free.

I'm sure EzRad just meant that he'd like to hear from somebody who has actually tried the product. No need to get twisted knickers over it.

EzRad,
I would think it to be a scam personally. Any company that says the following (I am boding and underlining the statement)
"These magic nematodes prevent mushroom flies and pests from contaminating the growing mushroom mycelium and damaging your crops."
Sets off red flags in my book, There are no "Magic Nematodes"
To top this off we pasteurize casing layers to stop things like this messing with the grow. Pasteurizing also stops the fungus gnats and molds so no need for the "Magic Nematodes"
Meaning you can save your 9$ + s&h and get better results.
You will be hard pressed to find some one that has used the product because it looks like a scam intended to part a fool from his money. Sorry, but from years of experience, study, and knowledge It looks like snake oil.

Actually casing starter which contains nematodes can be valuable asset in helping to prevent pests and contamination in your mushroom grow. Although it is possible to have a health and successful crop of mushrooms without using casing starter, it can be a helpful component if you are worried about contamination or pests such as mushroom flies.

What contams is it a valuable asset in preventing? I am not asking to be cynical, just wondering. What does it do to the pH? ~Pixie~
