Mycelium Beaten Back?
    #1060139 - 11/17/02 04:15 PM (14 years, 25 days ago)

Friday I placed two casings of rye grain cased with 50/50+ (oystershell added no lime) into my fruiting chamber. The casing layer is only about half an inch thick. The problem is that the casing layer was pretty well colonized on friday, but I checked them today and the mycellium had pulled back. I could see no signs of the mycellium at all today. What is going on? The casings are not dried out or anything like that and there was absolutely no sign of contamination and they smelled fine. I covered the casings back up with foil and placed them back into my incubator, but I was wondering if there was anything else i could do. Please give me any advice you may have.

While oyster shell is great for adding texture to a casing mix it makes a poor pH buffer. You might try adding some hydrated lime or calcium carbonate. I'm not sure if a low pH would cause the mycelium to pull back as you are describing.

Good luck.

If I'm not mistaken oyster shell is calcium carbonate.

I should have said POWDERED calcium carbonate (limestone). Oyster shell is slower release.

Yea, but it really doesn't sound like a ph problem though. The casing layer was quite well colonized at one point so I really just need to know what could have beaten it back. Temps are in the upper 70s.
