Help, time crunch, got MGMC, but not sure...
    #10600057 - 06/30/09 08:26 PM (15 years, 6 months ago)

I bought some MGMC to use as a casing layer, but I've been reading some threads about how easy it is to contam, and it's a hell of alot of work to get all the shit out of it. Has anyone used it SUCCESSFULLY? If so may I ask how you did so? If not, I was told I could make my own with 50% peat and 50% verm. Is that correct? I have verm, but haven't had any luck finding peat. Any suggestions would be great. My pans really needed a casing layer tonight, but I guess I am gonna have to wait until tomorrow.

I've been told to definetly remove the fertilizer balls cause it will burn the myc. And not sure about contams. I've read some threads that say it is highly contamable...

Its a good SUBSTRATE- but you don't want NUTRIENTS/FOOD of anykind in a CASEING layer.

I've been told a lot of whacked out shit on this board.
You want to remove the balls, fine.
There's no need to case in the first place, it's just making things complicated. You want it more complicated than that- so go ahead. Easy isn't good enough for you.

I have yet to see people use mgmc (miracle grow moisture control) as a substrate for fungus, as really as far as it appears to be a soil conditioner with added fertilizer for plants. That really wouldn't supply nutrients for our purpose, but would be a good casing material.

Peat is found in 1 cubic foot square bundles. Also pick up some dolomite lime crushed is preferred over pelletized but you can crush it yourself or just add it as is not quite as effective but it will buffer over time.
I've always pasteurized by lining a large turkey roaster pan with foil fill and cover with foil and then the lid. I usually set the oven at 150-160 and let it go for a couple of hours.Make sure the mix is moisten the very damp this means a handful squeezed will drip a couple of drops of so. This will allow moist heat you'll be misting again once it's place and leveled on your substrate. This works for me also the MGMC has worked in a pinch after the fert pellets are removed or at least as many as you can see it takes some time but any left will burn the myc on contact and in the immediate area. Pasteurize this as well it's worked very good for me BTW. GL

Don't Pans need a casing layer?

I'm sorry, I am sure I am using the wrong words here. I have pans with broken up cakes and coir that i let recolonize and am using the MGMC as the layer on top. I'm sorry if I am aggrivating you, that is not my intention. Like I have said in earlier threads you have participated in, this project and one other are surprises for my husband and I just DON'T want to fuck them up. If casing is "too complicated" does that mean you only do cakes?

Some species don't need a casing layer, I always do my bulk substrates without a casing layer, same thing as what you are doing, minus the casing. As far as I know though, pans need a casing layer.

I have 4 pans, and when I say pans I mean little aluminum disposable bread loaf pans. I think I am going to try 4 different methods. One with the MGMC, one with straight verm, one with nothing, and one with a 50/50 verm/peat mix.

Does anyone know if I can use the peat moss I pulled off a tree in FL?

Pans do better with a casing layer.

And even with cubensis, some folks get better results with a casing layer applied.  It isn't simply "more complicated".  Just because those who have gone with and without applying a casing layer advise that it is "optional", doesn't infer that it isn't beneficial.

Folks who advise that a casing layer is pointless are only regurgitating info they read from others new to the hobby. ~Pixie~
