Cultivation using existing substrate and spore prints
    #10598744 - 06/30/09 04:26 PM (15 years, 6 months ago)

Hi,

I've had what I think is a good look around and cant find an answer to my question.

Can anyone advise me of the following.

I have some active woodchip substrate which was harvested from a large bed. I can see mycelium within it and I have now laid it in a cool dark spot which is damp.

I also have some spores from the harvested fungi.

If I drop these spores onto the existing substrate I would assume this would emulate what would happen naturally.

Can anyone post me a link or provide info on whether this is a viable techinque as all the growing info seems to focus on cakes and terrariums etc.

Thanks

I would not advise you to try to germinating spores on already colonized substrate.

Try using those for inoculating a different bulk substrate like cardboard and coffee or something.

not a viable techinque.
use those spores to inoculate a sterile substrate with more nutrients.

What you're suggesting is why senescence isn't a problem in nature.  Mushrooms drop spores, which germinate and infiltrate the existing mycelium, adding fresh cell lines.  If you're growing outside in a bed, nothing is wrong with dumping spores in.
