First time.... Think I ran into a problem and need a bit of advice...
    #10598793 - 06/30/09 04:37 PM (15 years, 6 months ago)

I started a grow about 30 days ago. I'm using golden teacher (brf) and have 30 jars. The mycelia seemed to spread well, but the vermiculite at the top of the jar seems to have fallen about a 1/2 to a full inch down most of the jars. My jars are just about 95% colonized but it looks like the mycelia has stopped where the vermiculite barrier has re-settled. Is it growing under the vermiculite? did it push the substrate down? Or are my jars ruined? On a few of the jars lose vermiculite has fallen down most of the jar, but i can tell that mycelia is behind it so the only thing I'm really worried about is the lowered barrier. I took a few pictures so hopefully you guys can see what I'm talking about. (sorry my camera kind of sucks).

One last question... In certain spots of my jars the mycelia is fluffier and more of a solid white than the rest of the jar... Is this normal? Thanks for the help... Its my first time and I have no one guiding me through the process.

As long as you don't jostle them around, the verm should be ok.
Different textures is normal.

Sounds like you're almost there.

it is just the myc consolidating (getting smaller) it is normal and if they are mostly colonized no biggie. just make sure you rinse before and after dunking and try to dunk in cold water to keep bacteria and other contaminants low

Ok... Thanks for the help. Its getting down to the end so maybe I'm just looking for problems... If its just the cake consolidating and I have nothing to worry about then cool!
