Shotgun only 80% humidity?

I'm using a shotgun FC. I have smaller than 1/4 inch holes popped in 6 sides, lots of them. 3 inches of perlite (its expensive)...misting/fanning 5+ times a day.
I bought a cheap humidity gauge from petsmart (a round dial one) and it read 60%...so I taped up maybe 1/2 the holes, now there are less holes then most shotguns, humidity rose to 80%. I turned off the rotating fan in the room to see if that will help. The temp is 72-76 degrees with a fluorescent light about 2 feet above everything.
I also noticed when I bought the gauge it read 40% which was exactly right. On the way home in the car it dropped to 20% and stayed there until I put it in the FC....could my gauge be bad?
Any ideas?

Probably it isn't right. There are teks to calibrate it though.

"When one creates phantoms for oneself, one puts vampires into the world, and one must nourish these children of a voluntary nightmare with one's blood, one's life, one's intelligence, and one's reason, without ever satisfying them." Eliphas Levi
"The joy of life consists in the exercise of one's energies, continual growth, constant change, the enjoyment of every new experience. To stop means simply to die. The eternal mistake of mankind is to set up an attainable ideal." Aleister Crowley
"The Universe is an artistic catharsis." Artifex Infinitum

The easiest thing to do to raise your humidity is to cover the holes up, and i don't mean all of them at the same time ..just start closing a row on each side at a time with scotch tape or some other tape and it should raise the humidity . Try this over a few hours tonight .
One other thing you can do to inhibit this from happening agian is to "TEST" your tub first. Then put the cakes or pans in it.
If you want to try and find a cheaper perilite then go to a feed and seed store..or at Tractor Supply .(where BUBBA would go to.)I get this bag of Verm. for about $13.00 bucks...

Thanks for the tips myco!
I decided its my meter. I covered 50% of the holes, turned off the rotating fan, and misted the holy hell out of everything...20 min later the meter didn't change 1%.....lol piece of junk.
Think I should just uncover some holes and turn the fan back on? I don't want to spend the $$$ on a good hygrometer.
