It depends really. I was always under the impression that azures like fresh wood chips because there is still a relatively easy source of sugar and nitrogen in this material which is very helpful for initial colonization. I think shaving, because they are largely from cured and dried lumber would have less of what azures like. Another problem is that shavings do not create an adequate physical environment for out door patches. The shavings might be better suited for indoor culture supplemented with additional nutrients. 2 cents.

My 1/2 cent;
They will colonize aspen wood shavings, likely the other woods you described. If all you have are lathe shavings, you still will want to look for a source of bigger chips. Even if it's just for the top few inches, shavings by themselves don't seem to be a good surface for fruiting. But for amping up mycelium, they work very well.

As I understand it Alder is really the best. Also it's pretty important that the wood "chips", not shavings, are fresh.

Quick isn't always best. Azurescens will run fast through sawdust but will not fruit as well as they wood on slower colonising wood chips.

True, but understanding the nature of woodlovers and the requirement for chips or even larger pieces as a platform for primordia i wouldnt try sawdust other than for spawning.

Those are very closely related to Aspen, so if it works with Aspen....(?)

if you want the perfect size woodchips make them yourself. Thats what I did. I took an freshly cut down piece of maple and chipped away at it with an axe. you can bag about a garbage bag full in 50 minutes if your strong like me  :wink: my friend could only handle chopping for like 10 minutes but hes a wuss .
