Crumble and case question
    #10595437 - 06/30/09 12:01 AM (15 years, 6 months ago)

Hey guys, I was just getting ready to do my first casing.

I birthed one of my cakes, which had a beautiful mycelium network all around the outside of the jar.

I put it in a plastic bag and cut it in fourths with a knife.

There were strands of mycelium throughout the interior of the cake, but it is mostly vermiculite.  It's brown.  Shouldn't it be white like the outside of the jar?

Thanks.

If it's brown, it is possible that the interior didn't fully colonize even though the outside made it appear that way.

What was the medium you inoculated?

Yes it should. You're supposed to wait a week after colonization before birthing. The whole thing should look very white.

I used verm and brown rice flour.

This is very disappointing...they have been colonizing for over 2 months, and I waited 4 weeks after the appearance of full colonization.

Sounds like something went wrong in making the mixture. Never used flour and verm before, but I would assume they colonize as quick or quicker than grains.(bout 1 to 2 weeks)

My guess is that they didn't have enough moisture to completely colonize.

Maybe just crumble the cake in a pan or something, mist, cover and place back into incubation.

Good luck bud:gethigh:

Thanks for the advice psilcolium.

Does anyone else have any ideas on how to salvage these cakes?

IMO if after two months they didn't fully colonize there is a problem. They should have been done within 3 weeks or so.... If there is NO white in the center you might as well break on up and feel the inside of it. Is it dry? Sometimes not having enough moisture will cause a cake to not fully colonize. If it was too wet you would probably have a contam before it would stop colonizing IMO. Try again. If the inside is not colonized and you try to make a casing you will waste materials and most certainly have a contaminated casing. Nature of the beast. Do not birth too early. My friend always waits at the very least 3 days after the cake visibly looks colonized just in case the center isnt done.

The moisture content appears fine, however, upon closer examination, I found a steel grey color mixed in with the verm...could this be a mold?

From what I've seen you will still be able to pick out the appearance of VERM and I believe there is a substance in it which may be micah or at least look similar and is shiny (atleast in the verm ive seen. If it is grey and fluffy like a mold it will likely be a contam, especially after you case it. A pic would be worth a million words and hours of speculation not to mention a thousand opinions but is the center of the cake obviously and indefinitely not white at all? You will still see chunks of verm when you break up the cake but the whole thing should look consistent IE no completely brown spots, white all the way through. Please do a favor for you and everyone trying to help and just snap a fast pic.
