Did you know you can seal Tyvek with an impulse sealer like a FoodSaver?
You can make desiccant packs yourself from bulk silica gel or Damp-Rid.

LoL I just always made them by hand anyways, all you need to do is go and buy some 100% silica kitty litter from a store then make a little packet for it out of a paper towel and one piece of scotch tape to hold it shut..

But your idea aint bad either..

i've thought about this for a while. my intent was to use tyvek and damp-rid but i thought the damp-rid could get slimy. then i just got busy and never tried it.

does an impulse sealer work the same as the sealing strip on a Food-saver?

here's another thought/question. you know how some products come with a silica gel pack and some come with a little plastic canister like thing that says oxygen remover or something to that effect. are they basically the same thing?

it's been my understanding that it's more oxidation that breaks down actives. Tupperware/zip locks/food-saver seem to work fine for me for r/h and rot. i grind them up in a coffee grinder and keep in a mini Tupperware for camping and whatever i bring back never seems to clump, spoil even when our tent flooded. it was still great after a few months.

hey, i just remembered reading a thread a few months ago about removing oxygen from a container using .......iron filings and .........salt, maybe. i'll see if i can find it later.

@ Damion; glad to see you haven't changed your avatar. i wuv her sooo much.

That's your cue to change it. I don't think it will leak out of the tyvek packet.

i got 2 BIG bags of damp-rid on super sale ages ago and havent touched it, since i got 2 Ronco dehydrators. one was only 5$ in a thrift store :whoo: but well worth 30$-40$ new and i bought that one just for the trays. it's cheaper than buying just trays. 24hrs and it's done. the trick is to raise the bottom off the counter like 4" to get better convection and lower the temp. i also use it to make hiking meals.

sorry, back on topic. so is the sealing strip on a foodsaver the same as an impulse sealer? also what do you think about the oxygen removal? i couldn't find the thread ( i'm a searchtard:flowstone: ). but i think he did use some kind of packet for the material.

It shouldn't, tyvek handles liquid very well, vapor easily get's through though.

Works the same, don't know if there's some technical difference.

Oxygen removal does sound like a good idea if you can make it easy to do.

Edit- I vacuum pack them, that's removing the oxygen.

found it

http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/10034981#10034981

it was iron fileings and salt. i guess my brain still works after all.

yeah, i vacuum pack too for long term. although this might be a good idea if it's a container you want to open occasionally but still keep long term.
