8 pints of wbs
    #10591502 - 06/29/09 09:36 AM (15 years, 6 months ago)

I have 8 pints of viable 100% colonized wbs. Any suggestions as to the preferred method for an amount small like this? I was thinking put it all together uncased and fruit or maybe 50/50+ casing..... this isint enough really to spawn to straw right?

8 pints = 4 quarts = a monotub
Or two shoebox tubs.
Or four of the quart-size lunch containers.

Spawn that stuff, man. Spawn it.

Well, I'm a huge fan of coir+coffee. But straw is popular. Or poo, or whatever. But 8 pints is a lot of spawn.

If you live in the sticks,  I bet there are horses.  I would get some horse manure and pasturize it,  it's easier than straw. IMO.

At a 4:1 spawn ratio, you could have a 5 gallon bucket's worth of fruitable substrate.  That's plenty.

I also like a coir/coffee sub.  Whatever floats yer boat.

I have not attempted coir and coffee yet, any suggested or recommended teks worth giving a shot? I really didnt realize, I guess, that 8 pint jars is that much, I used to throw a pint into a sandwich size tupperware container with a light 50/50+ on top (some pics in my gallery) and fruit that....

Thanks! I appreciate that.

Yeah, I've been pre-occupied.. But, I think I'm gonna take a shot at a 50 gallon PE super-tub, so I need to brush up a little so I know what to blame the inevitable contamination on.

Anyhoo..  antimatt3r..  Here is How I Make a Coir Bulk Sub.  It's pretty easy, and there is a link to Mitch's Coir tek in there as well..  Don't over think it.  Hope that helps!

About 4:1 sub/spawn. Whatever works really, depending on how large your tub is going to be.  Stretching your spawn too far, however, invites contamination due the increased time it will take for the spawn to colonize the bulk sub.  Are you going to go with a monotub, or do you have another FC ready, or what?

That's one brick of coir?
It's enough. 12 would be better, but 8 will work if that's what you have.

There will also be a bunch of half pint pf jars ready at the same time as the grain, if I plan to use a monotub could I suppliment my colonized wbs with a ground up cake or two?

also wondering where or if there are any alternatives to using a paint strainer walmart didnt have them.?

thanks!

MGMC? That's used for casing, not mixing in.

And I don't have a grain tek, with or without a paint strainer. I use a metal strainer anyway, wire mesh.

Here you go:
Boil a gallon of water.
add 1 quart each: gypsum, verm, coffee
stir, bring to a boil.
drop in a brick of coir, put the lid on.

Wait until it cools to room temp on it's own, then spawn.

They are all different weights, actually. Every brick.
But get the one that is the size of a brick. Get a 3-pack if you are at Petco.

Doc_T's way isn't the norm but it does pastuerize it,  the coir will hold a temp over 160f for over two hours.
