Colonization Problems?
    #10587951 - 06/28/09 06:26 PM (15 years, 6 months ago)

Hi everyone,

So this is not my first attempt doing a bulk grow, but this is my first experience with this particular problem.  So i spawned a bunch of colonized rye to a Coir/Coffee/Verm substrate at field capacity, that is, it dripped when i squeezed hard.  Although this is normally what people tend to shoot for, its drier than i usually go.  Either way, i mixed a bunch of trays with the same substrate at a little more than 1:4 ratio, probably 1:5 to 1:6.  I mixed them all up and placed them in the incubator at 78 / 79 F.  Its been four days and there's little more growth than white fuzz balls, being the grain, sitting in the trays.  This is much slower than i have experienced in the past with coir colonization.  One of the trays seems to have lost moisture and the substrate seems even drier.  Could this be a reason for my slow colonization?  Is there a way to treat this without harming my myc and risking contams?

I guess i could sit and wait a few more days, but my instincts are telling me the substrate is too dry and i don't want to wait to the point where i have bigger problems.  Can anyone help me with some advice?

Its they are too dry you can mist to where you want them to be- if they are too wet- thats harder to deal with, what I do is add dry substrate- usally verm.

If its so wet- that its preventing the spawn run all together- days after you can still mix it up and just add more dry substrate-  and start over. like I said I usally just toss in dry verm to soak up the excess.

You can also 'crack' the lid if its a tub- not too much- it can be risky depending on your grow setup and methods- but if its gonna stall ANYWAY- it can and will help.

So spraying down my substrate, even while its colonizing, is a safe and effective way to add moisture to the substrate?

Doesnt sound like your coir is too dry if you squeesed it and it dripped water.
I wouldnt incubate. Leve them at room temp 70-75F is perfectly fine. Thats what i ahve my colinising jars at and i dont notice much difference in speed. at the most a few days.

Make sure your tubs are getting adaquate gas echange. I wouldnt spray it down with water unless its obviously dry, though id wait for a TC to confirm.

I wouldnt crack the lids, you should have some holes for gas exchange to begin with.

I have had this problem in the past. I dont know if it applies here though.

The reason for this in my instance was that I found my bulk substrate (commercially bought) had anti fungal additives to it. So the myc on the grain it self got big and fluffy but never started to colonize the bulk sub.

Yeah, i dont think thats my problem... i used the same coir i usually do, and have never had problems with, and the only other two ingredients are coffee and horitcultural verm.  I guess ill give it another day or two and then try takin it outta the incubator.  The only thing i fear is the room, its going to be at about 70, and im afraid the shift to the greenhouse is going to be too little of a temperature shift.

What was your spawn ratio? What did you cover the trays with exactly?

It unlikely you're substrate is too dry to colonize. ~Pixie~

I agree.  IME, a substrate a little on the dry side seems to colonize a bit quicker, and real ropey.

my spawn ratio was a little more than 4:1  maybe 5:1... 6:1 at the most... i used the spawn ratio calculator to figure this number out.  I covered each tray with a piece of aluminum foil and placed in the incubator at 78  79, since i thought the room temperature of around 65-70 might be too cool

If one of the trays seems drier, yet all of your trays suffer the same problem equally, moisture might not be the reason you're slowing down..  Is your spawn ratio the same as usual?

What else could be slowing me down?  Should i spray down my trays?

alright, im really getting worried now... its been 6 days and theres little growth in my trays, some, but little.  Today i decided to take teh lid off my incubator, in case the problem was gas exchange.  Im really worried about this project failing, i have about 12 trays that i want to be placed in my greenhouse and really dont wanna lose them... HELP!

It sounds like your ratio will slow you down a little. So be patient
Air exchange/Humidity is important as well. That is very subjective though my friend. Don't just leave the tops off though. Make holes covered with tyvek or polyfil.
Make sure there is darkness as well while it's colonizing. when you want pinning give it light.

I know how you feel. life goes on though
