Spores from casing dropped onto neighboring casing
    #10591207 - 06/29/09 07:24 AM (15 years, 6 months ago)

Hey,

Normally I wouldn't worry too much about spore deposits on a casing layer. That is to say, when when spores from the casing's own fruits fall onto that casing. This I have experience with and never had a problem.

Right now, however, spores from one casings fell onto the neighboring casing. The neighboring casing had been recently placed into the FC and was therefore not yet fruiting. It was at the point where mycelium had come up to the surface evenly and I was/am waiting for knotting. Some parts in the middle now look sorta darkish. At first I freaked out and thought they had contaminated or something, but I soon realized it was merely spores.

My worry is not about contamination as a result of the spores lying there, rather if the spores might not block light onto the mycelium in those parts thereby preventing any knot/pin production. I'm not too stressed about it yet, I figure Ill just wait a few days and see what happens. Just thought I'd get some more opinions on this in the meanwhile.

thanks

Lots of spores can interfere with the growth of small pins and primordia.  This is only a real concern with a heavy spore drop, most folks don't need to worry to much about it.  Only talking about P. Cubensis here. ~Pixie~

I have seen heavy spore deposits not only on casings but cakes as well and I did not notice any prohibition nor inhibition of growth and normal operation.

It's best to pick before spores drop, but please stop referring to your projects as 'casings'.  That's an incorrect use of nomenclature and only confuses people, just as others misusing the term confused you. The casing is only the top non-nutritive layer applied over the substrate.  It isn't a name for the whole enchilada.
