absorbed contam - is it safe?
    #10589325 - 06/28/09 10:33 PM (15 years, 6 months ago)

So, this is my first ever attempt and I only ended up with one cake out of the batch (I think the issue may have been adding too much water to the verm/brf). As this one was growing, I noticed a small yellowish watery splotch in the middle of the mix, inches below where the mycelium was beginning to form. The mycelium grew right through it, and it disappeared without a trace. I transplanted the cake to a terrarium yesterday after noticing signs of serious pinning. The cake is growing healthily, other than some minor bruising. Unfortunately, I can't provide pictures of the mystery splotch as it's long gone at this point, and I haven't been able to find a contam image on the site that looks like it.

I know the general rule is "when in doubt, throw it out", but I didn't notice any odd smells or any sign of contamination from the cake when I birthed it. Will it be safe to eat?

Sounds fine man. Yellow is usually not contam. It might have been a shroom growing between the cake and the glass.

It definitely wasn't a shroom, as this was very early on, and it was well below where the tiny bit of mycelium was growing.

Hmm, in that case, I don't know. If it disappeared though I wouldn't worry. If the whole thing starts turning green though then I would.

If it's pinning then congrats man.

mycellium often produces a yellow " piss" as it is sometimes called, totally normal

How far into colonization was it?  If the mycelium was just beginning to colonize, it definitely wasn't a fruit.  The yellow color you saw could have been metabolites(mushrooms dont piss) produced by the mycelium in response to an increase in temperature or even a mild mold/bacteria contamination.

Either way, if the mushrooms won and theres no sign of the contamination, youre safe.  You may consider fruiting it as is and not spawning to bulk though.  It would be a shame if the contaminant came back to haunt you.

That fact that it pinned means it's OK.
