Looking for advice
    #1058803 - 11/16/02 07:29 PM (21 years, 4 months ago)

Here is the situation. I purchased two of the sterile myco bags. Innoclated them and waited for three months for the substrate to turn 95% white. I then placed the bags in my office to get some indirect lighting. The temp in the house is about 68 degrees- Im sure that is why it took so long for the mycellium to grow. One of the bags started to pin. I was getting pins all over....three small mushrooms grew and all the other pins changed from a healthy white color to a grey color and stopped growing. I waited a week...growth has stopped completely and the color of the shrooms looks like they are dying. The other bag has a ton of white fluffy mycellium but it just will not pin...Im afraid that it is the temp in the house. I considered possibly the stagnant air inside the air tight bag may have been an issue. Out of deperation, I strerilized a fish tank, removed the two sterile substrates from the bags and placed them into the tank. Ive misted the walls of the tank to try and keep the humidity up. If this is a temperature issue, im not sure what to do...i have a heating pad but im afraid even the lowests setting may be too hot...Im also worried about a possible fire.

The bags were originally innoculated in aug...i can't imagine it takes this long for everyone...but i know if i just left the bags in my office and hoped for the best, they were definitely not going to produce anything. Something in my environment is just not working for me...is it temp?

Your slow colonization is almost certainly caused by your low temps, next time, create a simply incubator:

or

Thanks for the link ski...I'll check into that right now. Are temps in the 68 degree range just to low for fruiting EQ's and B+

WIth that low of temps, strain doesn't matter. No cubensis are gonna do good colonizing at those temps.

Fruiting is best at mid 70's F (low 20's C)

Ive assembled the incubator...luckily purchased a nice aquarium heater years ago and just found it in the basement...thanks guys
One concern- the temps have been about 68 degrees for the entire incubation period...now im going to increase the temp to 75. It is my understanding that typically you drop the temp to induce fruiting. Even though Ive been at the wrong temp, will raising the temp for fruting cause any additional concerns.
