What happens to mycelium in the Wild (outdoors)??
    #10586898 - 06/28/09 03:15 PM (15 years, 6 months ago)

Does it die off eventually? Are the new spores that are dropped replace it?

Does the mycelium go through scenecence (basically only able to produce a few flushes - or can it go on indefinitely as long as it gets more nutrients)?

Colonization only lasts as long as the source nutrients. Patches certainly die off as new ones are created. That is nature.
I have an area where I pick chantrelles every fall the nutrient source is replenished ever years under the pines.

Thanks -Hyphae- I always assumed since my garden is 100% organic material that the mycelium would rebound and grow some more mushrooms...But after re-thinking this I realized inside we give them adequate fruiting conditions this doesn't always happen when handed over to mother nature but it's always worth a shot..I once dried up a spent monotub and tried the grain alcohol extraction this did provide me with a couple extra doses but was hardly worth the work I put into it,...so of to the garden it goes....thanks for the reply....e

As far as i know every organism has a lifespan. As long as food and favourable enviroment is availible it will live out its life until it dies.

think back the the lifecycle of a mushroom. Spores germinate, the mycelium goes underground colinising the availible food. When conditions are right, mushrooms grow, drop spores which get carried by the wind, and when they find the right place, germinate and the cycle begins again.

Some fungus have longer lifespans than others.

Armillaria ostoyae (honey mushrooms) is the largest organism in the world (measured by area) located in the Malheur National Forest in Oregon is over 2000 years old which is just an estimate, it could well be as old as 7000 years.

Fungus are really not only a really fascinating lifeform, but essential to the planet.

To anser you question, mycelium will run into senescence or die etc if it gets old, or runs out of food.

Natural habits though are kind of perpetual. Fungi are recyclers, they take food from debri and in some species from plant roots, some even actually kill trees creating clearings for new plants to grow. They build soils attract insects, which bring in birds that drop seeds which grow plants.

Im really shocked that they dont teach this stuff in school (not my school anyway)

The largest up until the Oregon Amillaria (2200 acres) in size was the same species which was found in Michigan in a poplar forest it measured only 37 acres this one held the record for some time. 7000 yrs old! As long as the foods there! What does this say about senescing!

Senescence isn't a problem in the wild because each mushroom drops spores, and these spores germinate into hyphae and join the network, bringing in fresh cell lines.
