Writing on currency
    #10584299 - 06/28/09 12:05 AM (14 years, 10 months ago)

In regards to the Iran election, what would the penalty be for writing messages on large bills, such as 'Where is their vote?' or even quotes such as 'When the people fear their government, there is tyranny; when the government fears the people, there is liberty - Jefferson' if you could write it on a bill? Could you be convicted of defacing government property? What about denying you wrote it and carrying only one at a time?

Edit: I live in the states.

I can't find anything making this illegal

17 USC 333 seems to provide max 6 mons jail for defacing with the intent to render the note unfit for reissue, but if you don't so intend then you would not be guilty.  The whole point of your scheme is to keep the note in circulation, so I don't think you'd fall under this prohibition unless a court rules you only need to have intent to deface in such a manner in which the note will be removed, rather than actually having to intend the removal.  (this question of just what the intent has to be is problematic in lots of circumstances in the law, they say intent but sometimes don't say what you have to intend to do, clearly.  In theory all these questions are supposed to be resolved in favor of the accused, but not in practice.)

But this doens't mean there's not some law I can't find or that you wouldn't be convicted of 333 anyways, with them finding you did intend to prohibit reissue.

Obviously it would seem difficult to catch you, and who knows if they'd care to prosecute.

I can't imagine a bunch of detectives breaking out the CSI-tek on a banknote to track you down.
Besides, money's dirty; if a bill holds prints, there will be dozens on it from different people. (fresh Euro bills can hold prints quite well, used dollars not so much in my experience)

Now, if you were to be picked up and they find ten of such notes on you, some DA might decide to throw the book at you, and there really is no telling how that will turn out.

So, for your safety:
*Do not occlude the serial number
*One bill at a time

Sounds like a good idea.  I'd run them through a printer or a laser cutter.

The Wheres George people seem to be getting away with it.  The secret service asked them to stop selling the stamps to do it though.

I used to do a ton of Wheres George! It's fun as hell to see where all that money goes! At last check, I think I had 'hits' in all 50 states, plus Guam and some army base far away... all that money spent in Jersey!

The rules are pretty clear...

You CANNOT cover the serial numbers or other official type marks.

You CANNOT advertise on the money, which is why wheres george couldn't sell the stamps, because they had their URL. But YOU can make a custom stamp.

Part of the fun was marking bills in interesting ways! Most people prefer low key markings, as they tend to stay in circulation longer, which is key to having a bill with a good history.

All good fun, and the forums are good people... at least they were back in 2005ish.
