I sterilized a big bag of wbs last night...done about 10 in the past already...this one was the biggest of them all...i think it was a lil too big...because the grain at the bottom got all mushy and is stuck together...i tried massaging it...but its just squishy...prob about 20%-30% of the bag is soft and stuck together. should i throw it out...or should i just put some LC in it and hope for the best?....is it garbage for sure?

Broken kernels increases the chance of contamination, as does excess moisture.

If you have the LC to spare, why not use it.

Although the smart money is on 'toss it', I have to say I've had overcooked grain colonize properly. It's a matter of luck as much as anything. If you have the contents properly sterilized, it might work.

I too have had 'mushy' grain colonize perfectly well. Once the myc took hold of the drier grains, it seemed to dry the moister stuff out. Id isolate and monitor it. Fingers crossed

This might be due to the way you prepared the WBS.
I use a 5 gal bucket and a garden hose to thoroughly rinse my WBS. It's quick, efficient, and no mess indoors.
I soak it for 24 hrs, and then rinse it again with the hose.
Then I dump it out onto a screen, suck excess moisture out through the underside of the screen using a ShopVac (works great). I then aim a fan over the WBS to aid in drying.
Occasionally I'll go out and stir up the WBS to help it dry.
Once it's dry enough to where not much (or any) WBS sticks to my hand when I grab a hand full and drop it ... it's done.
Load your jars and you're set to PC.
I don’t bother to simmer or anything … just soak & dry.

i recently had a similar problem. soaked my WBS for roughly 12 hours. simmered for about 20 min and when i started filling my jars, i noticed the WBS in the bottom of the pot had started to mush together. i think it was from the busted corn kernels in the WBS. they are PCing now so ill report back once i get them out of the pc. if they look too mushy, i'm gonna toss them and try again with a different batch of WBS. i was kinda worried about it as well but the stuff on the top of the pot looked fine and didn't clump at all. it was just the stuff towards the bottom of the pot that seemed problematic. i used gypsum during the soak but i wasn't sure if i should add more to the simmer so i didn't.

I never have constant good results when i simmer the seeds. I just soak mine in warm water for 24 hrs...then rinse and drain like usual...add gypsum before pc'ing..and load into pc.
