Frozen In Time Mushrooms?
    #10582161 - 06/27/09 04:23 PM (15 years, 6 months ago)

I see these herbs and berries all the time in a glass container with a cork filled with some oil to preserve the look of the plant/herb inside the container for many years if not forever.

What is inside those containers that keep the plant looking like the day you picked it.

Would this work to preserve a picked mushroom?

A dry mushroom should last a very long time by itself if it's sealed and packaged properly.

I guess you mean, you want to preserve a fresh, wet mushroom? No idea.

I've done a mess of pickling and the process, (hot water bath, i.e. pressure cooker), might affect the psilocybin compounds in the fruits...

Be great to serve as a picnic condiment though.
I don't think that the peppers in oil are actually pickled though. I believe the herbs and peppers etc. are placed in olive oil for a time, thereby infusing the flavors into the oil. I think that you should take a firm fleshed specimen and try it out. Worst case, toss it out. If not, we'll keep an eye out for your new TEC!:goodluck:

I doubt it.
Heat is a common topic on this board, and a heated one.
Consensus seems to be that dehydrator temps are ok. I don't know if anybody has tried pickling fresh magic mushrooms, but I'd be willing to believe it's possible. If you know how to do it, please do a jar and let us know. Because that would make an awesome gift.

It's not going to pickle them like you're picturing.  Look up threads on psilocybin extraction. Look at posts by FastFred on the subject.  You're actives will come out, stuff turns to mush. Vinegar has a ph of about 4 I think. Fairly acidic.

But Basic solutions will degrade the actives. ~Pixie~

I don't know if its really pickeling them I want it to maintain its wet look with out withering as decor.

Having a decorative mushroom on the table of each strain I have made.

Pickling should not affect potency.  One of my restaurants purposely pickles the tiny eryngii's in the batch I sell them for garnish later.

You're right, vinegar is recommended for extraction of the pure alkaloids. I forgot.

Interesting all.
I also had a thought Sulli, concerning the bottle. With a sprig of rosemary for instance, you slide the cut sprig into the bottle stem first. The cutting closes while going through the neck of the bottle and then opens once it's IN the bottle. For mushrooms, the neck of the bottle would have to be at least as large as the cap.
While the herb is covered in oil, no oxygen is coming into contact with it. Maybe this is how you get the whole ever-fresh look. I still say you should try covering a specimen with LIGHT olive oil and see how it fares! (keep us posted)
What Doc_T and Psuper said about the acidic properties of vinegar make sense, but I think we're having two conversations at once! lol. xtofury mentioned "pickled" shrooms and I ran with it, sorry. It IS interesting though, like Doc_T says, "awesome gift", (Here Dad, I know how you like salads, Happy Father's Day! lmao).

I will post pics after next harvest and see if I can freeze them in time. I will have more than enough to try this.

Worst case, you could sautee it.

For a smaller bottle and smaller shrooms, you could use high-proof ethanol. The magic would extract into it, so you would drink a shot in some juice. Eat the shroom if you want, like a tequila worm.

I'm pretty sure im going to just submerge it completly. I don't see how light covering of vinagar would save its look the examples I posted are submerged as well. Some are confused here I never intend to eat these I just want them for show but as you know live mushrooms practicaly melt.

Also im almost 100% sure you can not pickle a mushroom. But just for those who care I will also attempt to do it as well. It sounds terrible if possible.

how about trying what they do with bugs? ive seen necklaces of bugs in a clear like plastic gem like they poured liquid plastic over a bug than they shape plastic how they want and shine it up.

would this only work with a dried shroom ?
