sweaty jars.

i injected 8 jars of brf substrate about 3 weeks ago and only one of them is colonizing properly. 2 other jars have one decent sized spot of mycelium growing but it isn't spreading the way it has spread in the one successful jar. the other 5 jars aren't showing any signs of mycelium growth whatsoever. the jars are half pint covered with two layers of aluminum; one in place of the jar lid and the other loosely over that. this is my 2nd attempt at growing after a failed first (which i now know failed because i totally sealed of the injection sites) and i've noticed that there are small beads of water on the inside of the jars. they're sweating it looks like. i don't understand why one jar is coming along really well and the other seven aren't; i don't prepare the substrate one jar at a time. this is only my second attempt at this so i don't know if this is a bad sign or not. help if you can. thanks.

The sweating in itself isn't too bad I think, so long as its not to the extent that moisture is pooling at the bottom, or the substrate looks like mashed potatos or something :P I've never done cakes myself, but I do believe you want it to have a fluffy/grainy texture. Too dense and wet and the mycelium will have a hard time (or won't) grow through it.
With regards to some jars showing signs of growth and others not?? Don't really have a good answer to that. Maybe just the particular conditions created in some of the jars are not favorable? And sometimes jars just flat out don't show any signs of growth, for me at least. Though this is not usually the case (and grains are not the same thing as BRF cakes of course) I have had it before that I innoculted like 6 jars of WBS and while most of them grew fine two of the jars just never sprouted anything. No visible contamination either, for that matter, but I still ended up throwing 'em out obviously.
Last thing, when there is enough mycelium growth its not uncommon to see like beads of yellow metabolite forming in places. This is not a problem, if you happen to see it.
good luck with your grow!

Why are you using foil in place of regular lids? Also, are there holes in your foil? Do a search for gas exchange.

i've seen foil used in tutorial videos in place of lids with holes punched in them. it's just easier i guess. i don't think that's the problem though... i have one really good jar. and yes, there are holes in the foil... the syringe made them :P. oh well, first try... i'll get it right eventually...

the lids are under the foil which is there for PC'ing, so the water don't get in - you can just use foil, but I think this maybe part of the problem (water getting in), did you just use foil for PC'ing?

I am pretty sure you can't replace a lid with foil. You had no lids on when you sterilized the jars? I think that loose foil probably cause some moisture in your jar. A lid seals much tighter. Just my opinion.
