Incubation Problem
    #10581029 - 06/27/09 09:54 AM (15 years, 6 months ago)

I put my jars outside in a trash bag in the shade, and it is pretty warm outside.

i had a digital thermometer reading about 81 82.

after a while, the sun had positioned itself to where it was shining on my bag.

i was lucky i caught it because the thermometer (sitting on top of the trashbag) read about 108 109.

The temperature was only this way for about 15 minutes if that.

i was wondering if that will hurt my spores or possibly kill them?

Thanks.
Will they be ok?

Thermo death limits for spores is 122F (50C) this is where degeneration of the spores begins. Your fine.

Why the trash bag, and why outside?  Makes absolutely no sense.  Why invite trouble?

i had it wrapped up and when my thermometer said that i brought them inside.

i felt inside the bag but it was NOT 109 degrees in there.

i think it was just the heat coming off the trashbag.

incubate at 75-80 degrees.
and dont put them in a bag that is just unnecessary and probably doing more bad than good.

Would it be better for them if i just let them sit in a cardboard box? (not being a smart-ass)

Lol i just watched a bad ass video on growing mushrooms and they said to put them in a cardboard box and put them in a trashbag.

They shouldnt  be getting any bacteria since there is aluminum foil on top of the jars and 2 holes for syringes.

It should be alright.

that video is old/outdated. and uses some slightly bogus information.
if you want your jars to colonize faster then leave them out in the open and take the aluminum off of the tops and next time use four inoculation holes. (plus that slightly increases gas exchange.)

incubation is not necessary unless you cannot keep your place of residence at normal room temperatures.
RR even says that leaving your jars out in the open room with light is actually beneficial for the myc.
