I keep fairly up to date on space sciences and the newest missions, but it sounds like you have astounding access to privileged information.
Bomb? Do you happen to mean this: http://www.space.com/missionlaunches/090623-lcross-flyby.html?
Impacting a probe to simulate a meteorite strike to gain valuable data? Why would they need a bomb? The amount of kinetic energy that thing will have will be far beyond what conventional explosives might yield.
I daresay you make it sound like something sinister is going on.

dr_gonz said: THERE IS NO REASON TO BOMB THE MOON
Once again, 'bomb' is a misrepresentation of the function of the impacter probe. To continue this misrepresentation could be considered by some to be lying, and it doesn't do well for one's credibility to lie.
That aside, there are many reasons to 'bomb' the moon. It gives an opportunity to study crater formation, and may give new insight to the moon's history, and by extension, Earth's.
Now, could you please explain to me why your personal emotional bias is a sufficient reason to retard the growth of scientific knowledge? Perhaps your deep insight and profound knowledge of crater formation could spare us the need to send a probe?

There, there. Don't feel too bad.
Please, I'd really like to know why you feel this mission is such a needless and perhaps even malevolent act. What is your line of reasoning? You are obviously quite passionate about your perspective, and likewise, I and mine.
So please, unambiguously, why is this such a bad thing?

2 tons + 5,600 mph (from the info I got)

I'm curious what the need is..

When the payload strikes the surface. Observations will be made for probably a long time after by a sister probe.

Just because it's gonna make a big boom doesn't make it a bomb. It's basically just a guided meteor.

See the surface of the moon? All those craters? Each one is a bit of data which gives us a greater depth of knowledge into the early life of the solar system. To put it all into frame, we need a 'standard' meteor to make a 'standard' crater. Provide a baseline for model-building and scale-up.

We need to study the moon for the same reason we need to make music or movies - its fun.

is anyone aware that I think India has already done this very experiment once on a smaller scale? The purpose of it is to gather data about what the moons crust below the immediate surface consists of, and specifically whether or not there is any water ice there. Because if there is, and perhaps other useful substances as well, the developers will soon be bulldozing up there and building hotels and shopping malls.
