chemical reaction to aluminum pans?
    #1057817 - 11/16/02 11:00 AM (15 years, 1 month ago)

I've read before that baking pans can sometimes produce chemical reactions when used for casings. I've of course ignored these admonitions.

So I do a casing in a metal loaf pan, probably aluminum, but who knows? Thin layer of perlite on bottom, nice KS cakes cut in half for substrate, layer of coco on top. Two gorgeous flushes. But where the coco is touching the metal sides it's turned black, and where the substrate and perlite are in contact with the pan, it's orangey, I'd say rusting, 'cause it seems to be actually into the metal surface. There's no bad smell whatsoever. The only discoloration is where casing meets metal.

So now I've got a small mountain of beautiful, plump KS's air drying on a shelf -- do I toss 'em?

Yes, toss em, toss em my way that is. But really, why would you throw em out? I would say that you have nothing at all to worry about. People have been doing casings in these metal pans for, well, a while and there have been no adverese effects. Don't sweat it, just eat em, not that I am encouraging you to do anything which might violate any laws, any where, at any time. Just saying.

Thanks for the input. I guess the real issue is whether the discolorations are from chemical reactions, in which case I'd keep the mushies, or if they're contams.

A buildup of aluminum in the himan brain causes retardation. But if your worried about that you'd better stop drinking soda and eating pie.

contams are different than heavy metals getting into your mushies.
but the answer is metals dont rly get into your mushies. use the search engine yo.

but mycelium will eat through aluminum. i have never had it eat through before the first flush, but some people have. i think it depends on the roll of the spores.

anyways, just use plastic.

I see what you mean but if I remember correctly we only know that shiitake do not absorb aluminium in the fruitbodies (thanks to RR). For obvious reasons, cubes have never been analyzed though.

Really? When I forget to put a trash bag between the substrate and the tray, I always end up with a shotgun tray

According to Stamets (GG&MM), metals can be concentrated by the mycelium and transferred to the mushroom.

RR confirms this here:

http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/14622959#14622959

Aluminium is a neurotoxin, and able to cross the blood/brain barrier.

Personally I wouldn't use it to prepare any type of food.

Really?! I was leaning towards being impartial, but after your post...  I think I'm anti.  Thx for the insight.

I guess even RR learns a lot in three years.  I'm just not going to use it, safe than sorry and all that.

I'd hate to toss it all on a maybe.  I'll just line the tray or use plastic next time...or is plastic even safe?  Maybe it should be glass?

plastic is fine. the mycelium doesnt digest plastic.

sometimes it will digest aluminum foil.

Funny that I don't see more threads about aluminum pans.  You'd think with all the folks using them this would be discussed more.
