This will be my first shot at cultivating mushrooms. After all the research I have done I've determined I am going to case all cakes in peat/verm. I have until the end of August to give this a shot, as I'll be going back to school and will be giving all of my supplies to a friend to continue cultivating.
Received my spore syringe today from Sporeworks. I will begin innoculating 12 jars tomorrow. Wish me luck.

fruit them as cakes, dont bother crumbling unless you plan to spawn to bulk. crumble and casing doesnt have much benifit, i just lost a tray of crumbled cake. It never recovered properly.
All the cakes i have fruited as cakes have been fine, but crumbling can someimtes be hit or miss for no increase in yeild.

I will not be spawning to bulk as my timeframe won't allow. I have heard mixed answers about casing. Perhaps i should take 2 cakes and case them and leave the rest unmolested for a comparative result?

Im doing the same kind of thing. Im fruiting in mini dub tubs but and a few cakes in 2 litre soda bottles, but thats more out of nessesity than anything else (cant afford to build a shotgun terrarium).
Ive seens some astonishing results from cakes fruited in a good terrarium. Ive seen crumbled cakes work ok, never seen them do better than cakes in a shotgun terrarium. Without extra food it cant do better.
Crumbling 2 cakes will obviosly produce a bigger flush and maybe slightly bigger shrooms, but the overall yeild will be similar to 2 cakes just left as cakes.
What some people mistake better yeilds for is sub par fruiting conditions. Casing layers can make up for lower humidity. A casing layer provides high humiidty right at the surface which is benificial for pinning, and also as a moisture reserve.
Put a cake in good fruiting conditions and it will do well without risking it by crumbling.

*Update* Day 5
Started 10 jars on Friday. The setup is a little ghetto but I followed sterile technique to the best that I could, and no signs of contamination yet.

This is the only jar with any signs of mycelium growth. So far so good.

2 days ago I also made a karo/water LC and used the last 1CC of the spore solution I had left so I can hopefully inoculate some more jars soon.

Solution is 1:24 karo/water. I noticed some black molecules floating around inside there but I believe that it was just small bits of verm that got stuck in the syringe. I also notice some small white molecules floating around in there, must be the first signs of mycelium.

what are you covering your jars with? remember you need gas exchange so your myc can develop..
your verm layer is enough to counteract contams, maybe add micropore tape over innoc holes, i would ditch those covers yes.
looking good so far!
good luck.

Thought id report back on my crumbled substrates, 1 has started pinning on the bottom with 1 larger mushroom popping through the casing layer and the other has yet to pin while all my cakes have fruited.

glad its all going good veda. the crumbled cakes seem like they take longer, but you may get some nice flushes out of them.
as for the jars, they're being covered by coffee filters so I don't believe gas exchange is too much of an issue.
the LC is being covered by micropore tape.
