if you programmed him correctly he wouldnt fuck up basically the reason HAL killed every1 was indeed cuz of human error the error of coding in reality we would have the computer come up with solutions based on data and then we would decipher which solutions we wish to use

They didn't program HAL to do that shit. HAL was supposed to be AI... AI learns. It was probably one of the first, if not the first, movie to depict that flaw in AI.
If AI can learn, it can learn bad things. Of course it would have to be true AI.
Artificial intelligence is a complex thing. I thought the movie was pretty cool, but I agree some of it was corny.
why would they need it to learn that seems highly unnecessary so tell me why didnt HAL just control the pod ship and go retrieve the dead guy than why did the other guy go out in space why didnt HAL just do everything than, why send a bunch of hibernating humans
Dude I didn't write the movie lol.
I'm just saying, HAL was AI. Do you think someone programmed him to kill? No.
This is kind of like the Johnny Five thing. Do you think someone programmed Johnny five to think it's alive? No. Since he was AI he learned how to behave like a human, to the point, where he thought he was alive.
HAL obviously learned how to kill people and show human-like emotions. Was that programmed? No it was learned by artificial intelligence.

I think 2001 A Space Odyssey is the greatest film ever made. If aliens came down to earth tomorrow and asked me to show them three things to explain humanity, I'd show them 2001: A Space Odyssey, Mozart, and South Park.

My interpretation:
The evolution of humans as a species was guided along by a superior, off-world intelligence. They planted the black obelisks as guideposts along our path to help develop us as an advanced species.
The first step was when the apes discovered the first obelisk and received the cognition to use tools. This obelisk was placed out in the open where it was easily located by simple pre-humans. (not neanderthals, BTW.... neanderthals would have been waaaay more advanced. I would offer that the chimps in 2001 are essentially the "missing link" between the animal world and the developed human mind.)
The second obelisk was buried on the moon, so only when we left our planet and began to venture out in the solar system would we be able to discover it. The second obelisk pointed to Jupiter, where another obelisk awaited. This obelisk did not change the humans who encountered it, but it gave the signal pointing the way to the next obelisk near Jupiter.
In order to reach the third obelisk, somewhere near Jupiter, could only be reached by a space-faring society. By the time a human is able to reach this obelisk, we just might be ready to take the "next step" as far as our conscious evolution is concerned. This is where Dave has his encounter with "whatever" the cosmic guiding power is, and he is reborn into the next stage of human consciousness.... The Star Child.
Whaddya think?

That seems to be pretty much it. With an added kicker that I will not mention for those who have not seen 2010.
