BRF Cake Questions (Australian Mushies)
    #10570132 - 06/25/09 11:12 AM (15 years, 6 months ago)

This is my first time growing (I'm growing an Australian strain), and this is day 22 after the inoculation of my five jars.  They have been sitting in my closet in the dark at normal room temperature inside a closed rubber maid container.  I made a vermiculite/brown rice flour substrate. I used the PF-Tek method shown here :

http://www.fungifun.org/English/Pftek#a4

The only thing i did differently from this method is that i used 2cup sized jars instead of 240ml jars, making the jars about twice as big as the ones in the tek.  Over time, two of my five jars showed signs of contamination, both being green mold. The other three jars look just fine, but seem to be taking quite a long time.

Really my question is how long do you all think it will take for my jars to fully cultivate my jars when on day 22, two of my jars are about 70% cultivated (rough estimate), and the third being about 50%?  If more info is needed just let me know.  Also any growing tips would be great.  Any sort of response is appreciated

Lots of variables here ....

Vitality of the culture / spores
Moisture content of the substrate
Texture of the substrate
How loosely or tightly packed is the substrate
Size of jars
Gas exchange

I have seen jars colonize in 20 days or less and as long as one month.

Looks like you are on the one month program.

Good luck.

Thanks for the quick response.

The spores i bought from a friend of mine who only produced one cake, but they were really great mushrooms.  That is the reason i bought spores from him.

The substrate was at a great moisture when i first started, but I'm worried that because i used a larger jar (basically a 1 pint jar), the moisture has decreased to the point where the mycelium won't have enough to grow healthily.  (haha is healthily a word?)

The jars were very loosely packed just like the tek explained.

What do you mean by gas exchange?

Thanks again

Gas exchange you see abbreviated on this site as GE .... and is associated with the exchange of gas required for optimum substrate colonization.

GE is different than FAE (fresh air exhange) which is required for pinning and optimal fruit growth.

GE is subtle.  Fungus is an animal, like us, that 'inhales' oxygen and 'exhales' CO2 .... a build up of CO2 is beneficial for substrate growth .... but from what I understand, not too much.  The heat generated from the growing mycelium results in a pressure differential that can push gas ..... like through the vermiculite barrier and out the inoculation holes in your jars.

I hope I remembered this correctly .... if not, sorry.

The search feature here is really cool ... you could type in 'gas exchange' and get loads of info. to wade through.

Good luck MAN.
