 Stupid things we have done.

I know there is a FAQ here, but I think what we need is a thread of some stupid things we have done when first growing. I am sure we have all done at least one thing that we wouldn't do again. Maybe in the long run it could help other new growers like myself. Here are just a few of mine:
1. Picked first flush, did not know how to clean mushrooms so I put them in a strainer and washed them with water. Ever see soggy mushrooms...yuk. Oh, I then preceded to weigh them...lol Nice weight when they are water-logged. What a surprise when they dried.
2. First casing used straight potting soil, no sterlizing or anything. Those contams came so fast didn't know what hit me. Green is not a lovely colour especially in a huge tupperware container. Don't know what I thought I was going to grow in those huge tubs. Now I use little 9 in bread pans.
3. When I finally did get first flush that came out well saw blue where the mushrooms were picked, thought it was contamination and ditched the casing never seeing a second flush.
4. Can't forget those $100 grow kits you find on the internet. Ordered about 4 of them and never saw anything grow but the bill on my credit card. Don't do it. And PLEASE do not order spores from that place that charges 50-100 bucks a syringe. Almost did it but found the Shroomery just in time to save me. Finding this place was the best thing that I did do. Thanks for all the help from everyone here.

Good idea.
1) for my second casing attempt, I cased with sterilized (using the steam sterilization, you know, boil in a pot for 60 min) cow manure. The shit wasn't even leeched. Amazingly, I did get 4 huge (biggest to this day) fruits off of it.
2) I got this bright Idea to make a glove box out of clear sterilit container, and just use it upside down oriented since the lid was not clear. So I cut the holes out, sanded down the edges of the holes, cleaned it out the inside and set it up for a test run, when I turned it upside down, what did I find, oh yeah.....the bottom, unlike the sides is translucent, but not transparent.
This is a small admission for a long list of crimes. I really need to not smoke so much when making crucial mycological decisions. Oh well, at least I'm high so I can laugh at them.

i'm still in newbie stage and pretty lucky so far, but here's one:
Don't over-water your casing.
after the first flush one casing shriveled up and pulled from the sides so i tried to fix it by misting it often and ended up over-watering it. pins would come up but they would abort and turn rotten real quick. after it dried for about a week it started sending up normal fruit again.
btw, the casing was 50/50+ on the bottom, sliced cakes in the middle and 50/50+ on top. was really great except for the over-watering bit.

My tree turtles gave my dad a low-dose burrito one time, he thought he was looseing his mind cause he has never been anything but drunk or stoned, after i told him he thought it was pretty cool, but at first he was gettin ready to call 911,
dont mess with people like that, i thought it was funny but now that i think about it them damn turtles are grounded.

kramer first harvest...he picked em all. i mean all the pins and everything and then wondered why he got contams before the second flush. you should have seen him standing over the casing with tweezers for 45 min.

I birthed a cake in a poor man and gave it to my cousin as a present. I told him exactly what to do and how to maintain it, I even wrote it down for him and taped it to the side. I went back like a week or two later and it a was filled with water! I said "what the hell happened, can't you read?" he said "yes, but I put water in it because it completely dried out". that fucking dumbass, that was a perfectly good cake. That was just stupid on my part. I should have known that some folks aren't cut out for mushroom culting.

My gerbil took his jars and wrapped them in a heating pad for incubation...yes compeltely wrapped them up. The temp turned out to be over 110F and completely dried out. Needless to say those jars were a waste of time and money. Yeah...im ...i mean my gerbil is stupid!

I innoculated the spores right after I heat the needle, and therefore killed everything that went into the jar.
Went "AH!!" right away realizing I didn't cool downt the needle
